Children's LiteratureTeachers who want to introduce a marine mammal to very young children have their work cut out for them. Words should be kept to a minimum while repetition is important to learning, ideal illustrations should be clear and true to life. Before this book, part of the remarkable "Under the sea" series, nonfiction books for pre-readers were hard to find. This book about seals is a real discovery! The clear, age-appropriate text and lovely photo illustrations explain that seals are mammals, that they swim and hunt under the sea yet spend time on land soaking up the warmth of the sun. Important body parts such as flippers which help them swim and whiskers that help them find fish and other food are featured, along with photos of seals swimming, hunting or lazing on the sand. The book includes a bibliography, age-appropriate web site, glossary and index. If you are looking for a book series that introduces the natural world to the very young, you couldn't do better than this series. 2005, Pebble Plus/Capstone Press, Ages 3 to 6.
