Children's Literature - Melissa Hower
This book is one of the books included in the "Going to Work: Animal Edition" series. Animals have important jobs just like humans. This book describes the ways animals search for and rescue people. The book begins with a brief history lesson about the first animals used to do this type of work. The reader will learn how both dogs and horses work together with humans to save lives. The author describes the special training these animals receive in order to be successful. Information about how dogs and horses use their senses to aid humans is also revealed. Furthermore, this book includes information about the ways animals were used to search and rescue people involved in several disasters that occurred in the United States. Important words are found in bold print throughout the book, and definitions for each word can be found at the end. A website is also included where children can find links to learn more about search and rescue animals. This book would be a great resource to use when teaching children how to write a research paper. The vibrant photographs and interesting text will keep even reluctant readers engaged.
