Children's Literature - Jeanna Sciarrotta
The third book in the "Erec Rex" series picks up with its namesake as he struggles to fulfill even more quests, hoping to fill in his amulet and become one of the three rulers of Alypium. This time, however, even more is at stake. Upper Earth is in danger, and if Erec does not succeed in his tasks, it could cease to exist altogether. Erec will once again rely on his friends, most importantly Bethany, in order to help him along the way. In Book Three, readers will see still more of the budding romance that not-to-subtly, penetrates this action packed adventure. Author Kaza Kingsley continues to add dimensions to her characters as Erec proves to be likeable, humorous, but most importantly real, as he struggles to control his ambitiousness and focus on saving Alypium from destruction. The Stain triplets once again terrorize Erec and try to sabotage his every move, and this time they have some help from one of Erec's own friends who unknowingly leeks information to the evil Baskania. The "Erec Rex" series continues to be strong in the ever-growing fantasy genre of young adult literature, and, while it may draw many Harry Potter fans, it stands alone as a series to be reckoned with, complete with its own version of quests, magic, good, and evil. Most will find it to be a very relatable, action-packed fantasy adventure! Reviewer: Jeanna Sciarrotta
VOYA - Cindy Faughnan
This third series title finds Erec Rex on a new quest where he must collect the five Awen from their hiding places and connect them to a crystal so they can be contained. If he fails, Substance, which is necessary for Upper Earth, will be out of balance and Earth will be destroyed. Erec and his friends explore areas controlled by the Awen where they find that Erec becomes so ugly no one can look at him, the group must speak in opposites in order to communicate, and the area is in a constant state of destruction. Erec finally learns the identiy of his real father and, in so doing, brings about a prophecy that the scepter will belong to him. Erec must survive a battle with the evil Stain triplets and Baskania, write false notes to his friend Oscar because he has become a conduit for information to the bad side, and travel back in time to his three-year-old body to try to change the events of the future. Characters spend a great deal of time shouting at each other or giving long speeches explaining the rules of the world and necessary backstory information. Some of the magic is violent. People are sliced open to find an amulet, eyes are stolen and reinstalled on Baskania's forehead, when Erec is angry he has "cloudy thoughts" and grows scales and breathes fire, and there is a lot of throwing up by characters who are sick because of the events. Libraries with a high demand for fantasy with dragons and gadgets could consider this series. Reviewer: Cindy Faughnan
VOYA - Heather Pittman
Thirteen-year-old Erec continues his struggle to fulfill the necessary quests in order to become king of Alypium. If Erec fails, the evil Stain triplets will inherit the throne and hand over power to the cruel Shadow Prince, ending life as they know it for the people of Alypium and Upper Earth. Erec and his friends must discover the nature of the quests, decipher the cryptic messages of the Fates, and then complete the insanely difficult tasks asked of them. Erec travels to other countries and realms and goes into his past as well, where he discovers several shocking truths. Along the way, he contends with the Stain triplets, the Shadow Prince, and a possible traitor in his circle of trusted friends. This third series entry is even more creative and intense than the first two. The action is continuous, from the first scene where Erec begins turning into a dragon in the supermarket to the informative ending. This book is also darker than its predecessors, with more violence and gruesome imagery. The characters are developing nicely, with plenty of faults to offset their bravery and ingenuity. Abundant humor keeps readers laughing even as some of the scarier moments leave them gasping. Kingsley's vast array of magical gadgets continues to thrill as do her oddball secondary characters. This imaginative universe will delight and enthrall readers of young adult fantasy and have them eagerly awaiting the next installment. Reviewer: Heather Pittman

Gr 5–7—Erec Rex and his friends Bethany, Oscar, Jam, and King Piter are back. So, too, are the mean Stain triplets and the evil mastermind Thanatos Argus Baskania. Erec is still on a quest to become king. The story starts out with him turning partially into a dragon while in a grocery store and soon after being captured by Baskania, who intends to remove Erec's all-seeing dragon eyes and use them to gain control of the world. The protagonist and his friends spend much of the book dodging Baskania and the triplets as they try to complete quests three and four. Quest three has something to do with a "behind," and Kingsley milks that and other incidents for all the toilet humor possible. Quest four, on the other hand, is inspired by Welsh mythology. Throughout, Erec searches for his true parentage and attempts to understand a vision of the future in which King Piter's castle is destroyed. The boy hero with the smart girl sidekick, the wacky magical items, and even the silly food are reminiscent of the "Harry Potter" books. The ongoing adventures that will eventually lead to rulership are suggestive of Garth Nix's "The Keys to the Kingdom" series (Scholastic). Kingsley doesn't have the skills of Rowling or Nix but the excitement keeps the story rolling along despite some clunky dialogue. The book is certainly of interest to readers of the earlier works in the series but is not an easy place for others to start.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI

I loved this book! It answered so many questions that I had, but sadly it left me with even more questions than ever. The only thing that I didn't like aout this was the constant reminder tha he just HAD to sta awy from the scepter. I felt like we kept coming back to that and it was tireing, but other that it is extrodinary. I can't wait until the I can get the fourth book, which might b later tonight, but I juat hope it can leave me with some sastisfying answers ad less questions.

Erec Rex is back in his third adventure trying to save Alyphium. This time Baskania, aka The Shadow Prince, is back again trying to make the Stain Brothers the next kings. From the very beginning, it's easy to see that this is going to be similar to the other two books in that the quests and situations Erec faces will possibly end his life. This time though, it's not just Erec's life in danger, it's also his best friend (and hopefully one day love interest?), Bethany's life that is also in danger. As Erec returns to Alyphium from recovering from the last quests in Upper Earth, which seems to be a pattern, he finds that Bethany is in danger and he must hurry and get to her before she makes a big mistake. The Shadow Prince has found an "inside man," so to speak, and is gaining knowledge about Erec and his ventures, that he shouldn't know anything about. This means, for Erec, that one of his close friends is betraying the trust that he has given them. This also means that somehow, he has to outsmart The Shadow Prince, along with the Stain brothers, and complete his quests. These quests, like all the others, seem like they are becoming exceptionally dangerous and gives me the thought that either Erec can put every superhero to shame or he will be dead by the next book. But since there are still five other books in the series and Erec is the title character, I know this is not the case. This time Erec must "Get behind and set it free," which is quite amusing to some extent. We also get a lot of unanswered questions answered and, as usual, we get even more questions, but in due time they will all be answered, I'm sure. We learn more about The Hermit, whom we have met before, and we also learn a bit more about Oscar, Jack, and Melody (she was Bethany's roommate in the first book). Erec's second quest in the book is to find the Awens and bind them to something else that he's supposed to get from someone that destroyed it long before. Many sorcerers have tried and failed in doing this throughout the years, and they all failed, most with their lives. If Erec chooses to not take this quest on, then Upper Earth will not survive, and eventually neither will their own world. We also not only meet The Fates, but in my case appreciate and quite enjoy them. They bring some much-needed humor and a quite a few revelations to light, plus they are just fun! Some of the revelations we get are ones that we saw coming since THE DRAGON'S EYE, but there are others that are total surprises. There was something about THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH that THE MONSTERS OF OTHERNESS was missing, and it took me a bit to figure it out and I think I finally did. THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH was similar to THE DRAGON'S EYE in the way that we were dealing with Erec and Bethany and Kind Piter and not dealing with so many extra characters. We learned more about why Erec should be doing this and not focusing on the fact that he is doing it just because he seems to have to do it. I am once again left wanting more in this series, but this time I have to wait a lot longer for the next book, which doesn't even have a release date yet. And knowing that I have to wait so long to finish this fabulous series just makes me even more excited and impatient to know what happens next!

This is the third book in the renowned "Erec Rex" series by Kaza Kingsley. It is packed with adventure, mystery, and many moments where you will not be able to stop yourself from tearing up. Kingsley has once again executed a wonderful display of characters and plot. This book is better than its companions and will not disappoint anyone who reads it!
