Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The wealth of information provided in this slim volume is all brought into focus by presenting it within manageable categories. The first chapter, "Where Land Meets the Sea," gives an overview of the coastlines, from sandy beaches to rocky shores. Various aspects of that environment are then covered in sidebars with photographs. These include beach burrowers, cliff colonies, fossil finds, and hiding places. Subsequent chapters are done in a similar manner and include information on such subjects as "Why Tides Happen" and "How Reefs Form." The facts are presented in an interesting manner whether covering the ordinary sand crab or the unusual hawkfish, which is colored to blend in with coral. The final chapter "Protecting Coastlines" points out ways to reduce pollution and urges more research into the lives of coastal creatures. This is one of the "ticktock guides" in "The Natural World Series" and includes addresses and websites providing additional information. 2000, Barron's Educational Series Inc., Ages 8 to 12, $5.95.
