Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Anyone who likes photography…the nostalgic Instagram aesthetic, or historic British beaches will certainly enjoy this book." --Library Journal
Library Journal
This curious, pleasingly quirky little book was made with an old Polaroid SX-70 camera popular in the 1970s. British photographer Nicholson (Ganges), most noted for his sports photography, found the vintage camera and some outdated film and, delighted, put aside his digital equipment to embark on a holiday of sorts. Traveling to centuries-old seaside beaches in Great Britain, Nicholson took seemingly historic photographs of the places and their people. He achieves a kind of manufactured or re-created nostalgia, in which the photographer is whimsically playing with time. (One must look closely at the images to realize that they were not made decades ago.) The smooth tones, muted colors, and hint of liquid blur, along with a chemical cast over the images, is quintessentially Polaroid—and seemingly vintage. The 70 images in the book are also reproduced to size with the familiar white borders of these images, which furthers the illusion. Most impressive, however, are Nicholson's selection of classic subjects and precise composition of each of these delightful images—a blend of historic locales and people at play. VERDICT Anyone who likes photography (especially older methods of taking pictures), the nostalgic Instagram aesthetic, or historic British beaches will certainly enjoy this book.—Raymond Bial, Urbana, IL
