The case studies are very interesting. If this is a true sample of the American male population, most men do not have happy, fullfilled lives. Women have it rougher than I thought(ha-ha)!! The detail of their thoughts and concerns is excellent. However, much of the analysis is difficult to read. For a non-psychologist, I could handle all of the results analysis and contemplation.
I read this some ten years ago ... Findings: There is a string of developmental challenges that we all face, At each transition we are challenged to deal with letting go of certain things, and accepting a new stage's social and psychological challenges. To the extent we are willing to deal with the changes, and the decisions we make to set up each succeeding structure of our lives ... that will determine how well or painfully we live out each 6-7 year stage. There is no mid-life crisis ... just a continuing cycle of transition decision, and living in the next structure, either effectively well, or not. The research on real men's lives, and the discussion of the transitional challenges were well worth the price of admission. This is not about self help, it is a wake up call as to what has been happening. Good reading. Starting a new decade of life myself, and plan to re-read it now. Will touch base if my reaction to the book changes ... I have offered this title to many young male colleauges as they reached various points of life decision, and continue to do so.
Good stuff and easy to read. A must for any one considering a change or pondering a next step. A road map for adult male development. Don't let this information come too late in your life.
