School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-- Using the framework of the seasons to organize their study into four chapters, the Roops follow a family of Whooping Cranes for one year during their migration between Wood Buffalo National Park in northern Canada and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. Many details of their existence, including mating, nesting, and feeding, are incorporated into a story-like narrative which generally avoids the pitfalls of anthropomorphism. Report writers will need to read from cover to cover to discern needed facts, since no table of contents or index is included. Color photographs of variable quality are spread liberally throughout; when they are placed on facing pages, it is difficult to determine which label belongs to each picture. Slightly older readers will enjoy Patent's The Whooping Crane: a Comeback Story (Clarion, 1988), an absorbing survey of conservation efforts to save the crane which includes the same useful life-cycle information in its first two chapters. Purchase of both titles may be warranted, but Patent gives a more complete picture of the challenges to survival facing the Whooping Crane today. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, CT
