Editorial Reviews

This addition to Globe Pequot's successful Curiosities series is predictably diverting, but its author is far from average. Steve Pomper is not only a published crime novel author; he's also a veteran Seattle police officer. Between 911 calls and writing out citations, he stays alert by educating himself to every facet of Emerald City life, including things that might stagger the imagination of even an honest cop. An inexpensive way to enliven your own Seattle beat.

When we left Seattle 44 years ago, we knew about some of these things, but not the history and stories behind them. Reading this book makes us want to go back and revisit some old haunts and explore new ones. I remember Dick's Drive-in so well with those 19 cents burgers (I'm not kidding). The boys used to say they were taking the girls to "Ricardo's 19", but we were wise to them. I wish he had mentioned the statues of J.P. Patches and Gertrude and their location as we would like to see that. This is a great book for Seattle old timers, newbies and visitors. Pomper combines information and humor in his descriptions of the many curiosities of this interesting city.
