Long ago, Ephemera was split into a dizzying number of magical lands-connected only by bridges that may take you where you truly belong, rather than where you had intended to go. In one such land, where night reigns and demons dwell, the half-incubus Sebastian revels in dark delights. But in dreams she calls to him: a woman who wants only to be safe and loved-a woman he hungers for while knowing he may destroy her.And an even more devastating destiny awaits him, for an ancient evil is stirring-and Sebastian's realm may be the first to fall.

Publishers Weekly
Sweeping onto the scene with flair and grace, this latest page-turner from bestseller Bishop (Dreams Made Flesh) flutters its eyelashes at you like a shy country maid and then sinks its teeth in like a hungry succubus. The maid is Lynnea and the succubus is Sebastian, and their unlikely romance is at the heart of the impressively uncliched battle between light and dark raging through the world called Ephemera, where the land changes in response to the deepest desires and fears of the inhabitants. When the Eater of the World came into being, the Guides of the Heart shattered Ephemera into myriad pieces, each shaped by the will of a Landscaper and linked to other pieces by Bridges; they also cornered the Eater in a Landscape unconnected to the rest of the world. Now a foolish student has set it free, and Sebastian must help his cousins, Glorianna and Lee, a Landscaper and a Bridge of unusual power and talents respectively, to trap or destroy it. Bishop's pure originality and lyrical prose bolster the occasionally uneven characterization, and the tender romances and friendships will delight fantasy readers tired of gore and lust. (Feb.) Library Journal
The world of Ephemera exists in the form of many magical landscapes, guarded over by Landscapers, women who shape these worlds into their myriad forms, and Bridges, men who act as transition points. When an ancient evil known only as the Eater of the World finds a way to escape its long imprisonment and begins its destructive onslaught within the many landscapes, only a few of Ephemera's residents still remember this creature's existence or know how to fight it. At the center of the battle is an incubus, a half human-half demon named Sebastian, whose powers over the land-and over himself-have yet to be unlocked. The author of the "Black Jewels" paperback series (Daughter of the Blood; Heir to the Shadows) makes her hardcover debut with a dark romantic fantasy series in which reality is shaped by desire and each person finds the world they deserve. Bishop's talents lie both in her ability to craft a story filled with intriguing characters and in her flair for smoldering sensuality that recommends her to fans of Tanith Lee, Storm Constantine, and Anne Rice. Highly recommended. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

At first, I was sort of confused because nothing was directly explained.. after i understood everything that was going on i fell down a steep hill of complete immersion. I loved this book and cannot wait to get the next one on my nook!

I read this book in 2006, excited that Anne Bishop was coming out with a new series. I reread it when Belladonna's book came out, and read it again when Bridge of Dreams came out. I only have a few series that I start over at book 1 every time a new book comes out, this is one of them. I love the world Anne Bishop creates and Sebastian is one of my favorite characters. You have a lot of familiar themes from her Ring series: dark doesn't mean evil, light doesn't mean good, and the actions you take make the world around you for better or worse. Her books always blow me away with the depth of the world and I always find something new I didn't notice the first time I read through it. Her characters are complex and their relationships to the other characters are so well done. My only complaint about this book is that Lynnea is just too sweet and innocent and she gets really annoying after a while, but Sebastian is so richly done I still enjoy the tale.

Anne Bishop has a remarkable ability to create worlds that no one ever thought could exist. Sebastian is one of those worlds. The book is about the battle between evil and good, an old story premise I know but Ms Bishop gives it a new twist. Instead of just dealing with bad versus good, the book also looks at the in-between of the two concepts. This book is "fast" read and is one that isn't easy to put down once started.

I love love love this book. I want to move to the Din of Iniquity and eat phallic delights. The whole series is above and beyond fantastic. I cannot say enough what a fabulous author Ms Bishop is. Her worlds are detail rich lacking the overly boring 10 pages of the descriptions. You can really capture her worlds in your mind's eye. These books just make you feel so much and they serve as the perfect escape from reality. Unfortunately sometimes you will not want to come back. :) Thanks Ms. Bishop!

Originally terrified I'd never find another good book like the whole Black Jewels series, and afraid Bishop's other characters wouldn't hold a candle to Janelle Angelline...Sebastian, Glorianna, and Lynnea do not dissapoint and draw you into their captivating and ever changing world. You won't be able to put it down!
