Overview

A tricky ghost treats a lonely librarian to another chance at love…

Wilford town librarian Marnie Thomas has had too much loss to risk her heart ever again. She buries her hurt in books and finds her friends in stories, even though she longs for love and a family of her own.

Real estate developer Collin Morgan is back in town on Halloween to help his sister, but the last person he expected to see at his niece’s story hour is Marnie Thomas. The shy, awkward girl he remembered from high school has turned into a beautiful—but still shy—woman, and Collin can’t help the desire that rises up when he sees her.

But this year, the magic of Halloween conjures a wisecracking, cigar-smoking ghost named Bill in the library archives, frightening Marnie out from behind her books. Bill does everything in his power to bring Marnie and Collin together…but he can’t make them fall in love. Before the clock strikes midnight on Halloween, will Marnie finally open up to a second chance at happiness, or will she be forever haunted by the past?

My apologies - I believe I made this a Halloween/Christmas hybrid by mistake in my review. Too used to those Christmas ghost stories, I gues... This is a Halloween romance novella, with NO Christmas elements.

Second Chance is the first book I have read by Audra North. I chose it for it’s Halloween theme but then I didn’t get it read by Halloween. I am about five days late so hopefully, it’s still close enough. Marnie Thomas is the Wilford librarian. She has always loved books and this is pretty much her dream job. It’s Halloween and she is having story time at the library before the children go trick or treating. She enjoys telling them The Legend of the Wilford Ghost, which is a town library legend. Collin Morgan is back home visiting Wilford to help his sister and sweet niece. He took her for story time and can’t believe who the librarian is. He remembers her from high school but this woman is far removed from the girl he remembers. Marnie hasn’t seen Collin for fifteen years. She always did have a crush on him in school and boy has time been kind to him. He would never be interested in a small town librarian. He is now a big city developer. She can’t believe it, though, when Collin steps in to defend her against a rude man and his son, a man who also has ties to Marnie’s past. There is someone else there in the library who has his own reasons for wanting Marnie and Collin to get their happy ever after. It seems the legend of the library ghost is more than just a legend. And his name is Bill. He makes himself known to Marnie and does everything he can to try to push them together. This was a short, sweet and fun little book perfect for the season. It definitely makes me want to read more by this author.

I enjoyed this book but it was too short. I would like to see how it developed.

This was a light, fun Halloween story. It was great to see that the characters as well as the ghost got their happy ending. Marnie is the town librarian whose father left her and her mother without a backward glance. He is back in town with his new wife and young son, but he doesn't even bother to acknowledge Marnie as he daughter. Collin is in town to visit his sister and parents. He takes his niece to the library for story time and sees Marnie, someone he knew in high school. Bill, the library ghost, sees Marnie and Collin and knows that they are meant to be together. He takes a hand in pushing the two together on this Halloween. He doesn't want to see the two of them have regrets like he does. This is a fast read, but it has all the elements of a good story. I got to know the characters and their motivations. My only regret is that it wasn't a full length book since I wanted to see more (but then I always want to see more when I enjoy the book). The cover wasn't my favorite since it didn't really reflect the story for me, but that doesn't matter since it is the story I'm reviewing.

Short story, only 60 pages. Not long enough to develop a plot or story line. No logical sense of this. Would not recommend at all. Silly.
