Overview

When a millionaire businessman hires Nero Wolfe to investigate his daughter’s boyfriend, hoping to find that he’s a member of the Communist Party, Wolfe suspects it's nothing more than an overprotective father. But after a powerful gangland boss “advises” him to drop the matter — and machine-gun fire rips into his beloved orchids — Wolfe realizes it’s much more than a father’s overactive imagination. And when the boyfriend turns up dead, leaving Archie Goodwin as the prime suspect, Wolfe realizes he must act fast to prevent another murder — his own.

A millionaire businessman hires Nero Wolfe to snoop on his daughter's boyfriend. It seems like a simple case. Then a powerful gangland boss tries to convince Wolfe to drop the matter by shooting up his orchid room. The great detective soon finds himself in a highly complex case involving drugged drinks, man-killing debutantes and a decidedly un-American party. Reissue.

Editorial Reviews

Internet Bookwatch
Rex Stout'sSecond Confession provides a fine Nero Wolfe mystery, with Michael Prichard's strong narrative skills bringing alive the detective story of Wolfe's encounter with a gangland boss. Murder and his investigation of a lawyer blend in this vivid story.

    Nero Wolfe second tier

I would have to say the Nero Wolfe novels are my favorite mystery series, even surpassing Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Miss Marple. But that's more for the characters of Wolfe and Archie and the rest of the gang. Not one of my top Wolfe novels, but closer to a true whodunnit than some of the others. Well worth the time.

    Archie fan

I like Archie. Spending time with him is always enjoyable. This book gives you some insight of the mood of the country at the time the book was written. I have read several of Stout's books and found this one to be a "good read".
