K-Gr 2-- Nathan gets a second-hand pet when his neighbor moves to California and gives him her black-and-white tabby cat. On the same day, Nathan's father receives a second-hand car and puts his heart into getting it into top shape. All is well until the boy's father proclaims it's time for a checkup--the car to the mechanic, the cat to the vet. Louie squirms, howls, and yowls, and, once home, runs away. Teary-eyed Nathan is beside himself as he and his dad comb the neighborhood for the missing pet. Finally, Louie returns home on his own. This is a simple slice-of-life story that depicts the love between an animal and its owner. Like Pamela Allen's My Cat Maisie (Viking, 1991), Louie has a distinctive stubborn streak. The whimsical watercolor drawings in soft hues combine with ink crosshatchings to capture the lighthearted tone of this story. An upbeat tale that can be shared one-on-one or in a group setting. --Debra S. Gold, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland
