    Quick review of pertinent information

    We took in a new little dog in need of a home. Even though she is two, we were reminded to work on training as if she was a puppy. The book also reminded us that she would never be able to tell us about the "pack" she had lost or about her previous experiences, both good and bad. There were helpful suggestions and encouragement in an easily read format - a quick read.

    Helpful light reading if you are considering adopting a dog

    I recently adopted a 1 yo mixed breed dog from the local shelter. He arrived home with lots of 'doggy baggage' including seperation anxiety, fear of car rides, growling at my cat, snapping out of fear. Adopting a shelter dog is a wonderful thing, but it is not for everyone. It takes someone with patience, understanding,and ample time. Adopting from a shelter with knowledge that all may not be perfect is important. This delightful book provided an upbeat tone, helpful basic hints, and touched briefly on some important issues. It did not go into detail about some of the problems I encountered like aggression or seperation anxiety. My dog is thankfully improving, not perfect, but making good strides in his 2 months with me. I wish I had read this book before I made my decision to adopt so that I would have been more prepared.

    Three Cheers for Strays and Other Shelter Dogs!

    Ms. Benjamin has provided a simple and straightforward set of instructions for helping to adapt the stray or previously-owned dog into the family. Recognizing that these dogs may have to overcome some type of trauma from their former lives, their time on the street, or just the fact that someone gave them up, she gives us a very basic formula for helping the pet to become part of its new family. There is nothing snobbish or technical about this book. It is written so that anyone who cares enough to adopt one of these needy pets will have the extra help they need in making it all work. I volunteer in an animal shelter and will be able to put this information to work immediately. Second-hand dogs (and all the other unwanted animals as well) are well worth the extra time that may be needed. Once they feel secure in their new family, they'll be the most loyal pets ever. This book has simple training advice that can be applied to virtually any dog. Simple maybe - but it really works!
