Overview

I want to walk out of Target and leave Blair there, wailing.... Nice people work at Target. Surely someone would take her home and care for her and buy her pretty things. So begins Vicki Glembocki’s brutally honest yet hilarious memoir of her agonizing transition into motherhood. Why agonizing? Because no one told her how tough it would be. So begins Vicki Glembocki’s brutally honest yet hilarious memoir of her agonizing transition into motherhood. Why agonizing? Because no one told her how tough it would be. Finally, Glembocki lays out the truth about those first months with baby: the certainty that you’re doing everything wrong; the desire to kill your husband, your mother, your dog; the struggle to balance who you were with whom you’ve become-a mother. Unlike any other book on motherhood, Glembocki breaks the New Mother Code of Silence, proving that "maternal bliss” is not innate, but learned. Funny and wise, she connects with new moms on a shockingly intimate level, letting them know that they are not alone.

It doesn't have to be like this

The Second Nine Months was a huge disappointment to me. Rather than a humorous memoir, I found this book incredibly sad. While some mothers may be able to relate to the author's inability to bond with her baby, I really hope that they eventually discover that the reason is not because what they are experiencing is normal. To the contrary, 'normal' is not what caused Glembocki's problems. Epidurals, and whatever other hospital interventions she endured, are not normal isolating the baby in the nursery is not normal 'crying it out' is not normal etc. I hope that some day if she has more children the author will discover the joy in having a midwife having a natural, supported birth sleeping with and wearing her baby and all the other experiences that lead to bonding.

A must read for first-time moms

This is a phenomenal book! It is witty and funny, and I could definitely relate to many of the author's experiences. This is a must-read for all first-time moms. Especially if motherhood is not turning out to be exactly what you expected!

    Thank God for this book!

I was running a 'simple' errand with my 3 week old baby at Barnes and Noble. My baby was screaming at the top of her lungs and all I could think was, 'What have I gotten myself into?'. Almost by accident I picked up this book. I cried all the way home in the car and then started reading this book as soon as I got a minute to myself. Within reading the first chapter I was laughing and crying and feeling better about all of those post-partum feelings I was having. It made me feel that I wasn't a bad mom and it is normal to have regrets and fears - not everything is rosy!

    Couldn't Put it DOWN

This book was wonderful and funny. So much pressure is put on being the perfect mother, Vicki says it's ok to be you, to have feelings, and to not love every moment of motherhood. I feel that everyone should read this book!! Thanks Vicki

    REFRESHING!

This book was wonderful I constantly laughed out loud! There is no other book out there like this that's so honest and tells it like it is in such a non threatening way. How refreshing to read a mommy book that doesn't tell you how you SHOULD be feeling and thinking.

    Telling it like it is

As an obstetrician for 30+ years I have heard other women relate their frustrations after giving birth. The 'Second Nine Months' tells the story so well. Moms want it to be a bed of roses, but the thorns are often painfully real. The truth is that having a baby for the first time can be hard without a 'manual' or very supportive kin. Luckily, Vicki had Drew, her second child, and a 'normal' or perhaps a 'wiser' next nine months.'
