Second Son is a story that intimately explores the transition experience of Ryan Salllans, born Kimberly Ann Sallans. The reader is pulled through Ryan's transition from infant to child, child to body-obsessed teenage girl, teenage girl to eating-disordered young woman, female to male, daughter to son, and finally a beloved partner to a cherished fiance'. A unique lens on life and love.
Ryan candidly shares his struggle to find love and acceptance; a struggle that transcends through every layer of society. He nearly died from an extreme case of anorexia as an insecure female college student. The only thing that saved him was his inner spirit begging for a chance to live.
Second Son chronicles Ryan's battle with his family, his romantic partner, and his body. He unblinkingly focuses on the empowerment he achieved as he underwent gender reassignment surgeries and traces his evolution into manhood.
It took twenty-nine years for Ryan to find himself. The world is now ready for this intimate and honest autobiography that will educate and empower men and women around the globe. At a time when fighting to find oneself is popular, Ryan's story will resonate with people everywhere who are journeying to find their own destinies, love, and life.

This is one of those books I couldn't put down once I started reading. I've known who Ryan was for a while but never met him. And then I started reading or hearing about Second Son. Somewhere I read an excerpt from the book and just had to purchase it.
This is such a courageous book for a person to write. I realize what Ryan does for a living, but still; he put everything out there for everyone to see, sharing some of his deepest intermost feeling with the world.
This is a must read book for everyone. I don't care if you're straight, gay, bi, or trans. I think it's important for everyone to know what makes each other tick. Without knowing about each other, we'll never understand what others go through. With a true understanding, it is easier for everyone to empathize and realize people are people.
I'm not sure what make me think so, but I really believe this book has a huge potential to save lives.
Read it and share it with your friends. When they're done with it, get it back and share it again.

A very personal look into one man's journey to be true to himself. It takes a lot of courage to stand up and say this is me, this is who I am, and Ryan accomplishes this with his book. A well written account of his personal struggle to become himself, as each chapter draws the reader closer to Ryan's ultimate emergence as he transitions from female to male. An excellent book on empowerment, understanding and the ability to take control of your own future, destiny and happiness.

This book is wonderful. Ryan's humor, insight, and honesty make this book essential reading for anyone who knows a transgender individual or identifies as such. His excellent recall of the details of his life keep the reader enthralled. This book also has the power to enlighten any individual who isn't familiar with transgender issues. Ryan goes beyond his transition process to explain his growth as an individual, which is realistic and fantastic. Ryan's book has the ability to help millions of people become more accepting of themselves and others. This book has already helped me tremendously with my personal exploration of my gender identity and expression. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Ryan’s raw narrative gives a view into a life that is as unique as it is powerfully “normal”. Through honest accounts of life altering and ordinary events, Ryan shows his humanity with a side of gender nonconformity, discomfort, and the process toward acceptance. Those who are looking for a book to expand their understanding of transgender lives will not be disappointed. They may be pleasantly surprised by the accessibility and ability to relate to such a courageous author and activist. I couldn’t put it down, and I predict other readers will have the same experience. Ryan’s vulnerability is transformed into strength in the hands of the reader, and I hope that many have the opportunity to experience this book.
