Overview

Leslie Hiller is a bright, attractive, talented teenager who leads a privileged life in New York City. She is also a perfectionist. When Leslie starts to diet, she finds herself becoming obsessed, getting thinner and thinner, until she is forced to realize that her quest for perfection is killing her.

First published in 1981, this groundbreaking novel has been lauded by countless librarians, educators, and teenaged readers. This new edition features an afterword by the author in which she discusses her own struggle with the disease, the difficult road toward recovery, and the lasting effects on her life.

As fourteen-year-old Leslie begins to shed the weight she feels makes her imperfect, she finds it increasingly difficult to reach out for the psychological help she knows she needs.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
For Leslie, wanting to shed a few pounds leads to self-destructive behavior, in one of the most harrowing stories yet on anorexia nervosa. Ages 12-up. (Jan.)
Children's Literature
The title refers to the familiar directions to Peter Pan's Neverland, but Leslie Hiller wants to fly away to "never-be-judged land, never-be-Mom land, always-be-me land." This important novel tells the compelling story of a teen-aged girl's battle with anorexia in a way that is as authentic as it is informative. Without casting blame, it shows both Leslie's pain and that of her family. It also makes clear some of the complex reasons why she needs to exert power over her body. First published in 1981, this reissue contains an afterword by the author, which makes it a new book in terms of further comprehending the devastating effects of anorexia nervosa. Hautzig's added personal disclosures surprise the reader with a double-barreled shot of realism that may diminish the hopefulness of the original ending, but which give the reader an even better understanding of this life-threatening but treatable disease. Not only does this highly recommended book contain a page-turning story and a winning heroine, it could be life saving for readers who have anorexia, or who know someone who might. 1999 (orig.

    Insightful

Although this book is fiction, it was actually written based on a part of the author, Deborah Hautzig's, life when she herself was suffering from anorexia nervosa. I believe that this is the reason why it is so well-written. I found the story really compelling and descriptive the conversations Leslie had with her 'dictator' were really insightful into the thoughts of a sufferer of the illness. Throughout the book, the author ensured to portray that anorexia is more than just an illness that could be easily cured. Anorexia is mentally frustrating and harmful along with the physical effects it has on the body. Overall, I think this is the best fiction book which deals with anorexia that I've read. I felt that the story was realistic and very honest. Although this isn't a long book, it still gives readers deep look into what effects anorexia could have on sufferers and their families. A brilliant and evocative book.

    Nice book

I found this to be a nice, short book about a girl with ED's. However, it does not go into much of the psychological portion of ED's, just the eating less part. Still, it was a nice read

    PERFECT!

I love this book. I started reading it while I was experimenting with anorexia/bulimia and it helped me understand how i felt. It helped me stop realize what was happening to me from the ouside looking in. If it wasent for this book i probley would have been alot worse. I like how it describes anorexia as a illness and not a problem. Which is how it needs to be looked at. Your not crazy your sick. This book is PERFECT!

    WONDERFUL!

I loved this book. Someone gave it to me while I was in the hospital for anorexia/bulimia. It has helped a lot in both good and bad ways. I used it to get 'ideas' but now it has made me want to get better and get my life back. I will be going to a residental place, but not without this book. It encourages me a lot.

    The BEST Book....

I read this book last summer and absolutely loved it. It was a light read and I finished it quickly, but it was so good it was hard to put down. The author writes in a fashion that makes anorexia seem more than just a 'problem'...it becomes more complicated and fascinating than that. The author transforms the reader into the girl with anorexia and plants them into her mind.

    Pretty Good

I thought this book was pretty good. It didn't really catch my attention but I thought it was interesting to read about what was going on in the girls head about how she felt about her mother and things. I didn't like how the book ended because you didn't really know what happened to her, or how long recovery took, because she ended still in the hospital.

    Very Emmotional!

I am a teenage girl and related well to the situations in this book. I recommend this to any teenage girl, especially those who have gone on diets and the mothers of teenage daughters. I think it would give them great insight into their daughters.

The BEST book in the world

Second star to the right is an AMAZING novel. I can't express in words how much that book did for me. It helped me realize something before I went over the edge. When I read Second Star to the Right, I realized that I too was becoming Anorexia. But thanks to this BRILLANT novel I realized that I'm perfect the way I am and was able to stop myself before it went too far. Second Star to the Right is my favorite book and believe me, I've read tons of books so it's got enough competition, but it came out on top! I can't believe it's not a Newberry Honor Book! I just hope that Second Star to the Right can help some other girl like me before she goes to far. Thank you Deborah Hautzig, really, I appreciate it more than I can express. Take my advice, do your self a favor everyone (guy or girl), and read Second Star to the Right, you won't regret it, I promise.

    A wonderful book

I first read this book a year or two ago and I still pick it up and reread it. I loved it and still do. The author gives you a clear picture of what is going on in Leslie's mind. It is a very good depiction of a girl with an eating disorder. The ending isn't clear, you don't know what will happen to Leslie but it enables you to wonder if she will in the end overcome. It's a truly great book.

    This book rocks!

Hey everyone! I'd just like to say that this book was a very excellent book. I loved to death. I read it when I was 13, I loved it then and if I picked it up again, I'd still love it.

    This book was heart warming

This book made it realistic about anorexia nervosa. It made me realize that nobody is perfect, it may seem they are 'cool' or something, but real friends love you for who you are,not what you look like.
