Editorial Reviews

BookLinx
"This short, easy to read and follow mystery would be a good choice for a literacy, ESL, or GED program for adults."
CM Magazine
"Youth may identify with Gwen's struggle against sexism at work and her desire to find evidence to support what she knows in her heart is right...I would recommend The Second Wife to a literacy or GED program for adult learners, [or] an adult class of English language learners."
Children's Literature - Denise Daley
Gwen Lake is a forty-five year-old divorcee who grudgingly agrees to meet her ex-husband's new wife. Gwen is surprised when the second wife confides that she is afraid of her new husband. Gwen is even more shocked when Marjory is murdered several weeks later. Gwen's ex-husband was a jerk but he was not a murderer. Gwen is a police officer but she has been on desk duty for many years. She decides to do a little investigating on her own. Using her wits and, at times, her badge, Gwen begins to slowly discover the truth. It seems that people are not always who they appear to be in this fast-paced mystery that will have readers trying to solve the case along with Gwen. This book is a good old-fashioned who-dun-it that is quick and easy to read. As the characters are in their forties and the theme is mature, this book may have more appeal to teenaged readers. It is part of the "Rapid Reads" series. Reviewer: Denise Daley

Thanks to Puget Sound Council for this review copy. Brenda has tried to get over the surprise and pain when her husband, Brian, left her for Marjory, a younger woman who was a temp in his office. Imagine her surprise when Marjory asks to meet, saying that she is afraid of Brian. Later Marjory’s body is found and Brian is arrested for murder. Brenda uses her position in the police department to search for clues to prove Brian’s innocence. This short (107 page) mystery will keep the reader guessing to the very end. It is part of Orca Book Publishers' Rapid Reads series for older readers. The books use low-level vocabulary which is perfectly suited for teens and adults who are struggling readers or those who are learning English.
