Overview

Inspired by true events, masterful storyteller Tom Grace delivers his most provocative novel yet. In The Secret Cardinal, ex-Navy SEAL Nolan Kilkenny returns in an adventure that races from the grandeur of the Vatican across the vastness of Asia, ultimately involving China, the Mafia, and the conclave of cardinals that will elect the next pope.

When Kilkenny is invited to Rome to consult on the functioning of the Vatican Library, he is still grieving the death of his wife and son, and welcomes the distraction of the seemingly simple assignment. But Pope Leo XIV has a startlingly different task in mind for him. In a private audience, Kilkenny learns of an unreported atrocity committed against the underground Church in China and its link to Yin Daoming, the long-imprisoned Bishop of Shanghai who has served thirty years of a life sentence in a Chinese laogai for refusing to renounce the Church of Rome. The pope wants Yin free and asks Kilkenny to devise a plan to accomplish this ostensibly impossible task.

With help from the U.S. president, American Special Forces, and the CIA, Kilkenny assembles a team of ten men and one woman that will use some of the most advanced weapons, aircraft, and computer technology to execute this extraordinary mission.

Publishers Weekly

Grace's latest featuring series hero ex-navy SEAL Nolan Kilkenny spins a complicated fugue around papal succession. After the tragic loss of his beloved wife and unborn son, Kilkenny arrives at the Vatican and is soon called to the side of the dying pope Leo XIV. The pope discloses that more than 20 years earlier he made Yin Daoming-who has been a religious prisoner in China for longer than that-a secret cardinal. He asks Kilkenny to head up a team to go to China, free Yin and bring him back to the Vatican. Standing in Kilkenny's way is intelligence agent Liu Shing-Li of the Chinese Ministry of State Security, a very serious fellow indeed. Interspersed with rescue mission chapters are detailed descriptions of the Vatican's inner workings and the details of the process of pope selection, which thrills-only readers may find distracting. But Grace (Bird of Prey) builds a suspenseful head of steam as Kilkenny and friends overcome twists and obstacles in a dangerous race against Liu's forces. (Oct.)

One is the most powerful man in the Catholic Church. The other is a man the Chinese government wants to destroy but fears turning into a martyr. Both are men of peace. Grace's fifth thriller (after Bird of Prey) featuring former Navy SEAL Nolan Kilkenny begins with Kilkenny on assignment in Rome helping an old family friend improve Vatican Library operations. Soon Kilkenny is swept up in Pope Leo's dying wish-to save the long-imprisoned Yin Daoming, the bishop of Shanghai, whose only crime is practicing his faith. As Kilkenny and his elite team plan to rescue Yin and smuggle him out of China, covert forces try to thwart the rescue effort and prevent any chance of the bishop becoming the next pope. Grace's spinning web of international intrigue makes for a gripping read, and the character of Yin provides a look at the power of one man of faith against incredible obstacles. Recommended for all popular fiction collections.

Meet the Author

Tom Grace, the bestselling author of the Nolan Kilkenny novels, is also an architect with a lifelong fascination with science and technology and a passion for storytelling. Grace mined his professional architectural experience with private technology companies and university research labs in crafting his first three novels, Spyder Web, Quantum, and Twisted Web. His interest in space led to Bird of Prey, and his indignation at China’s persecution of Catholics who maintain allegiance to the pope inspired his fifth novel, The Secret Cardinal.

Like the hero of his novels, Grace is a University of Michigan graduate, enjoys scuba diving, martial arts, running marathons, and reading a good book. He resides with his wife and five children in Michigan.

    Opus Dei

Presented as a novel of suspense to the general reader, my take is that this book is best enjoyed by the most conservative of Catholics. Suspense fans best look elsewhere as the book could not have ended any way other than how it did. The writing got off to such a rocky start that I found it difficult to believe the blurbs on the back cover, but in fairness, it did pick up once the main story got underway. What we ultimately have is a mediocre book that could have been a real step forward in understanding the divide between China and the Vatican.

    Highly Recommmend

A very good thriller and message driven book combined. Tom Grace writes a superb book of fiction - a story that surrounds an actual true event.

    Clancy meets DaVinci Code

I loved this book! Some reviews said it was slow to start and predictable. I did not find it slow at all and the story and characters so captivated me that if it was somewhat predictable, you were rooting for the story to turn out that way. Good insights into the Holy See and all the high-tech stuff of the best of Clancy. I highly recommend this book!

    The best book yet!

I started reading Tom's books years ago and quickly loved them, and I admit I only occasionally like Tom Clancy books, so I rate this as appealing to far more people but never losing it's edge or focus audience. I'd say he's done it again but this time he's done more. Despite reading his books and listening to him speak I still ended up with tears running down my face almost constantly through the last 10 chapters of your book. Hard to explain at my desk at work during lunch. OUTSTANDING! I cannot wait to buy copies for my family and hand them out like chocolate bunnies at Easter! This was the most incredible yet. The Detroit Free Press compares him to Clive Cussler.. Clive Cussler calls Tom Grace a 'Masterful Plotter'. This has got to be your best and most beautiful book yet. Thank you for letting me read it. EXCELLENT

An exceptional book! The writing is fast paced, easy to follow and the book is hard to put down from page one. What amazes me is that Tom Grace is not that well known in spite of writing several excellent suspense novels. Give him a chance I think you'll be grateful you did.

    fabulous thriller

Nolan Kilkenny still mourns the loss of his wife Kelsey and their son Toby, but his father and close family friend the Cardinal Librarian of the Holy Roman Church Malachy Donaher arrange for him to modernize information flow. Kilkenny assumes the real mission is not to make more efficient and effective the link between the Vatican Library and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, but as an excuse to get him out of his home in Ann Arbor: it worked as he is in the Vatican. However, dying Pope Leo XIV wants to use Kilkenny¿s other skills honed by his years as a US Navy SEAL as the Pontiff informs him that an atrocity has occurred in China against the outlawed underground church. Kilkenny doubts the veracity of the report as he figures if several hundred have been killed or just jailed, it would have made the TWISTED WEB of the Internet in QUANTUM time. However, he agrees to help bring to the Vatican the incarcerated Bishop of Shanghai Yin Daoming, who has spent three decades in prison for failing to denounce the Church and who the Pope made a Cardinal twenty years ago in secret. Kilkenny begins an over the top plan using state of the art weapon and computer technology to perform the impossible mission. Competent Chinese Ministry of State Security intelligence agent Liu Shing-Li plans to prevent Kilkenny¿s dirty dozen from succeeding. --- Kilkenny¿s latest escapade is a fabulous thriller that rotates the mission with the Vatican preparing for the papal succession that appears imminent. The key to the exciting story line is the formidable opponent as Liu is an intelligent capable adversary who has a strong team supporting him. Although the Vatican segue is well written and fascinating, those fans who prefer a thrill a page will find the interlude slowing down this suspense filled action-packed tale as Kilkenny is a BIRD OF PREY. --- Harriet Klausner
