Overview

A thrilling new historical romance from the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Wedding

When Arabella Barstowe is kidnapped, she believes her life and virtue are forfeit-until she's rescued by the notorious rogue Captain Rose. Bella never expects to see him again. But years later she learns the wicked truth behind her abduction, and she seeks out the only man who can help her take revenge.

What she doesn't know is that Captain Rose is just a disguise for the formidable Duke of Ithorne, who is intrigued to hear from the mysterious woman from his past. Their lives are soon entangled by danger and a growing forbidden passion.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Abducted under bizarre circumstances but ultimately rescued by the fierce renegade Captain Rose, Bella Barstowe returns home, reviled by her family as a fallen woman. Four years later, financially independent (courtesy of her great-grandmother's will), living in London disguised as homely Bellona Flint, and working as a copyist and occasional "researcher" for a social reformer's scandal sheet, Bella is still puzzled by the events of her kidnapping—until she comes across the appalling truth. Vowing revenge, Bella seeks out the man who rescued her years before, never realizing that Captain Rose is actually the powerful Duke of Ithorne or that they had met again at a masquerade she had recently crashed in search of scandal. VERDICT Lies, deception, and hidden identities ramp up the intrigue as a fascinating pair of protagonists join a familiar cast and provide another enchanting trip into Beverley's beautifully rendered, delightfully licentious Malloren world (after The Secret Wedding). Beverley is a best-selling author and member of the Romance Writers of America® Hall of Fame. She lives in Canada.

In 1760, Captain Rose looks forward to a hot meal, a warm bed, and rest as the Duke of Ithrone after two days at sea. Instead he checks a commotion at the aptly named Black Rat tavern where he sees two hooligans accosting a lady of quality. He saves Arabella Barstowe from certain rape. She repays him by stealing his horse and fleeing into the night. Over the next few years, Bella survives in London by copying letters for an infamous scandal rag. However, she also learns the truth about who arranged her abduction four years ago. She vows vengeance, but knows only one person who could do this for her. Bella seeks out the pirate she never forgot. For his part, Captain Rose never forgot the lady he rescued. The latest Secret Georgian Rakish romance (see A Lady's Secret and The Secret Wedding) is a fast-paced, action-packed tale starring a courageous female and a resolute hero who uses his half-brother's reputation as Captain Rose when it is convenient to do so. The tale is filled with intrigue as Bella seeks revenge against the person who destroyed her life but instead she finds love as Buccaneer Bella, but her thirst remains powerful. Although the story line slows a bit in the center for fans to catch their breath, The Secret Duke is another superb historical in the Malloren world of Georgian romance Queen Jo Beverly. The storyline of this book is great. There's no hassle with a high ranking male believing a low-born woman isn't good enough for him. Full of action and intrigue.

With a noblemen in disguise who falls in love with a changeable and strong-minded heroine, this book will draw you in as you hope for a happy ending among the twists and turns of lies that control their lives.

I lost interest 2/3rds of the way thru and felt it was all over the place with too many characters to keep track of who really had no bearing on the original plot. I have read all of the others but found this one a bit tedious. I Still enjoyed Thorn but felt his character could have been stronger. Bella was truly a "March hare." LORRAINE
