Chapter One

London 1844

Another spring shower was in the offing, but Katherine St. John took Me note of the overcast sky hanging heavily above her. She moved absently about the little garden, snipping pink and red roses that she would later arrange to her satisfaction, one vaseful for her sitting room and one for her sister Elisabeth. Her brother Warren was off in his typical endeavor of enjoying himself somewhere, so he didn't need flowers to brighten a room he rarely slept in. And her father George disliked roses, so she cut none for him.

"Give me lilies or irises or even wild daisies, but keep those cloying roses for you girls."

Katherine wouldn't think to do otherwise. She was adaptable in that way. So a servant was sent out each morning to find wild daisies for the Earl of Strafford, never mind that they weren't easy to find in the city.

"You're a wonder, my darling Kate," her father was fond of saying, and Katherine would accept the compliment as her due.

It wasn't that she needed praise; far from it. Her accomplishments were for her own sense of pride, for her own self-esteem. She loved being needed and she was needed. George St. John might be head of his household, but it was Katherine who ran the household, and it was to her that he deferred in all things. Both Holden House here on Cavendish Square and Brockley Hall, the Earl's country estate, were her domains. She was her father's hostess, housekeeper, and steward. She kept domestic trivialities and tenant troubles at bay, so the Earl was free from worry and free to dabble in politics, his passion, to his heart's content.

"Morning, Kit. Come havebreakfast with me? Do. I "

Katherine glanced up to see Elisabeth leaning precariously out her bedroom window, which overlooked the square. "I've had breakfast, love, several hours ago, " Katherine called back in a voice just loud enough to carry. It wasn't in her character to shout when anything else would do.

"Coffee, then? Please," Elisabeth entreated. "I need to talk to you. "

Katherine smiled in agreement and carried her basket of roses inside. She had in fact been waiting patiently for her sister to awaken so that she could have a talk with her. No doubt they both had the same subject in mind, for they had both been called into the Earl's study last evening, separately, but for the same reason -- Lord Wilham Seymour.

Lord Seymour was a dashing young man of devilishly good looks, who had taken the innocent young Elisabeth by storm. They had met at the start of this year's season, Beth's first, and the poor girl had looked at no other man since. They were in love, that universal emotion that made fools out of the most sensible people. But who was Katherine to scoff just because she thought the emotion silly and a waste of energy that could be better put to some useful endeavor? She was happy for her younger sister, at least she had been until last night.

In the time it took her to cross the back- hall to the stairs, she had servants running to do her bidding: a breakfast tray to be sent upstairs, the mail delivered to her office, a reminder sent to the Earl that Lord Seldon had an appointment this morning and was due in half an hour, two maids dispatched to the Earl's study to make sure it was in order to receive a guest (her father was not known for his neatness), and vases of water carried to Beth's sitting room. She would arrange the roses while they had their talk.

if Katherine had been one to put things off, she would have avoided Elisabeth like the plague. That wasn't her way, however. Even though she wasn't sure yet exactly what she intended to say to her sister, she was certain she wouldn't fail her father in his request.

"You're the only one she'll listen to, Kate," her father had told her last night. "You have to make Beth understand I wasn't just making idle threats. I won't have my family associated with this bounder."

He had laid the whole dismal tale in her lap by that time, but her calm "Of course, Father" had only made bun more defensive over his decision.

"You know it's not my way to be autocratic. I leave that to you, Kate." They both smiled over this, for she really could be domineering when warranted, though that was rare, since everyone did their best to please her. George St. John continued his defense. "I want my girls to be happy. I don't lay down the law, like some fathers."

"You're very understanding."

" I like to think so, 'deed I do."

It was true. He didn't interfere in his children's lives, which wasn't to say he lacked concern. Far from it. But if one of them got into trouble -- he left it to Katherine to sort out the mess. Everyone depended on her to keep things running smoothly.

    One of her BEST!

I absolutely loved this book! It's one of the first ones I've read that were written by her. Ever since that first time, I have read this book over and over again, it never gets old. The characters are so interesting and amusing, you can't help but anticipate what happens next. The plot is so very thrilling, and also touching. I love how the heroine is not so beautiful, but very headstrong. I also admire the fact that she knows 5 languages, and that the hero doesn't know what to do with her after he captures her. This book is highly recommended to those who love a battle of wits in romance. After reading the book, I have discovered a new interest in Russia. Perhaps I will travel there someday...

Would have given this book no stars if that were an option but unfortunately it isn't. So I will just comment on how ridiculous and unrealistic this story is. My god, the heroine is kidnapped, drugged with an aphrodisiac, and Dimitri has to release her sexual desires what a load of crap and then she keeps on putting off telling them her true identity because they won't believe her. Like her identity is the most unbelievable part of this story.Seriously getting tired of Johanna Lindsey's testosterone induced male leads and the females who are willing to do anything for them just because they look hot. She does the same thing over and over again. Just glad I found this at Goodwill and only paid a dollar for it.

I wouldn't go there if I were you...

Johanna Lidsey is usually a good writer... i've only read three of her others and this one was off the chart....WAY off the chart-in the worst sense!! It started off well enough, but I just can't stand the fact that the main character Katherine wasn't at least REMOTELY nice looking. To everyone in the book she was ugly... not only that but it got so bad I skipped to the ending just to see what even became of the two. This is not a good book to read ... stay away if I were you.

    Good romance

I really enjoyed this book even though I usually avoid romances like this because some of the plots are so repetitive and predictable The story kept my interest throughout My only complaint is the ending was abrupt and too rushed

    Great book weird ending

This is one of my favorites by jl but the ending was so weird! Why are they all running away all the time? After he came and saw her for the 18 bajillionth time didnt she realize that he actually did love her? It was almost like jl had to keep the book a certain length or her editor nixed the original ending so she came up with something else extremely fast. Still, a fantastic book but when i read it again ill be making up my own ending for it :-)

    Highly Recommend

I don't what's wrong either with someone giving one star to this book. The fact that Katherine wasn't beautiful is besides the point. from the beginning she was describe as a strong woman with personality and to me this count more than anything else. This was by far the best book i have read from Johanna Lindsey and trust me that's a lot to say when i have read every single book ever written by her.

LOVED IT! LOVED IT! LOVED IT!

I totally LOVED this book.I loved the characters. Will tatally reccomend this one!! It was HOT !!!The only thing I wished different about it is that Katherine should have been breathtakingly beautiful, wich she is not.We like to read about the perfect beautiful couple, BUT it was good to see that beauty comes from within. Her very cleverness made up for it :)and the whole point of the book was for her not to look like a lady!!Very very nice book :)

    I need a fan!!!

I absolutely loved this book. I don't recommend it to ladies that are appalled by constant arguing and fighting but for someone like me (argumentative)it's the perfect read. The characters were interesting, the plot was intriguing, and the ending was perfect.

    Speechless

I couldnt't put down the book 'Secret Fire,' until i was finished! i read the book twice on the same week because it was that good! This is the first Johanna Lindsey book i've read but it surely won't be the last, because she is a truly gifted writer who knows how to write about romance! What i liked most about it was that everyone always write about how beautiful their main characters are but Lindsey made it more realistic by making a handsome Russian Prince fall in love with the average-looking Lady Katherine, I loved it! I highly recommend romance-novel readers to read this book!

I Don't Know What's Wrong With These Other Reviewers!

Whatever you do, don't listen to these 2! Especially not the girl who only gave it 1 star! My God! She didn't even have her facts straight. Katherine was never described as ugly. It was more that it was hard to recognize her beauty at first glance, but it was there noetheless. This was such a sexy book, and it starts with a bang! Wow! Do yourself a favor and read this. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about!
