    Skrulls Invade Earth!

Oh my god, this was insanity! It was full of action as almost every panel was thrilling, exciting, and kept me on the edge of my chair. I haven't read something this intense since Civil War. There were panels and dialogue in this book that moved me, made me angry, and shocked the hell out of me. I'm still reeling from the last panel in the book. I just can't believe what the President of the U.S. did and that secret meeting that Osborn called....made me shudder and was a little bit disturbing. By the way I loved loved loved Ronin's role in this book and I absolutely got super giddy when he picked up a bow and arrow. That was so nostalgic for me along with seeing Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America fight together to ward off the invading Skrulls. If anyone wants to read this, I highly suggest reading Avengers Dissassembled, House of M, Secret War, and Civil War beforehand to get a little bit of a better understanding of the Secret Invasion. Great story and decent artwork, I loved it!

    Background stories at foreground prices!!

Here's the deal with this book, its a bunch of unconected stories tha take place either in the background of Secret Invasion or are precursors to the invasion. While some are intersting, they arent really necessary and certainly don't qualify their own collected edition. Some of the chapters I enjoyed, others (Savage Land) were almost pointless. If you're a completeist this will be like crack for you but if just want a good complete story, steer clear.

    I Also Recommend:

The Mighty Avengers hold their own

The Mighty Avengers may not be America's favorite team, but the idea of a government superhero team is always intruiging.

This book features Nick Fury's new team of howling commandos. It shows how and why he gathers the supers that he did.

It also features a story of the Sentry finally losing his mind as so many have always known would happen. But the real twist is what happens to Lindy (his wife) after Sentry loses control.

Disappointing, but there is a payoff.

The story Brian Michael Bendis had been setting up for the past five years with all his other Marvel events and side stories is the weakest of the bunch. Still, it does its job of wrapping up everything Bendis had setup, with new groups of heroes put into the spotlight (Runaways, young Avengers, New Warriors, Fury's new Howling Commandos) as well as a revival of interest in Marvel's stable of established heroes (Notably the central role of Iron Man and the return of Ms. Marvel.) They even take the time to both kill a long-surviving hero and resurrect a long-dead one.

The story is weakest, however, at giving us the sense of drama found in prior events. Captain America's untimely death & Hulk's thirst for vengeance towards the heroes of Earth, in particular, brought fuel to the fire of Civil War & World War Hulk, respectively. We did not really feel the spotlight on any single hero to connect to this time around (maybe they should have focused on how much this was Tony's great fall from grace?)

I'm neutral about the art, being a fellow Pinoy myself. Yu did the best with what he had to work with, still an epic story with some great highlights (like the big toss-up in the Savage Land), but nothing really awe-inspiring or defining.

In the end, very by-the-numbers for a mega-event, but I do feel a satisfactory summation from the dizzying sequence of events initiated by the Superhuman Registration Act, and Tony's rise to power and the launch of the Initiative program, to the subsequent failure of all of Tony's plans, and the end for superheroes and the beginning of the Dark Reign (No real spoilers here, read your comics for the full story!).

Too many charatcers leads to too few payoffs!

The general idea behind Secret Invasion in fantastic but this trade sadly, was too filled with characters that were unable to distinguish themselves in any way. I felt that the large amount of meaningless characters (Young Avengers, Initiative, Secret Warriors, etc.) took panels away from true personalities that are interesting.

On the art side, I thought Yu was not a good choice for a book that wasn't super dark. He does gritty very well, but superheroes, not so much. Just an average read.
