From Barnes & Noble

You thrilled to her adventures of Charlie Bone, now storyteller Jenny Nimmo is back to render the raucous epic adventures of Bone's magical ancestor, the Red King. The Secret Kingdom doesn't just fill in the back-story of the Bloors' Academy capers; it launches an exciting new fantasy that promises to replicate the success of the Bones saga.

Publishers Weekly
Nimmo expands her popular Charlie Bone universe with this first book in the Chronicles of the Red King series about Charlie's ancestor, the Red King of Africa. His name is Timoken, and he is blessed and cursed at birth with jinni gifts—flight, the ability to speak with animals—that give him "one foot in the world of men and the other in the realm of enchantments." Timoken and his sister, Zobayda, are thrown into a cruel world to find a new home after their birthplace is sacked by the evil viridees, and Timoken's gifts both save the children's lives and draw the viridees eternally after them. The narrative voice is direct and matter-of-fact, conveying the fantastic as well as the mundane facts of Timoken's incredible life accessibly; new readers will have no difficulty making this an introduction to Nimmo's work (in a prologue, Charlie provides backstory for those unfamiliar with Nimmo's earlier books). Timoken is a highly appealing young hero, and his panoply of human and magical friends provide just the right amount of help without stealing the show. Ages 8–12. (June)
Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
The author expands her popular Charlie Bone world with this first book in the "Chronicles of the Red King" series about the origin and adventures of Charlie's magical ancestor, the Red King of Africa. A "Prologue", written under Charlie Bone's name, provides backstory for those unfamiliar with Nimmo's earlier books. This information will give the reader relevant information to begin this new series. Timoken, a prince from a secret kingdom, and his sister, Zobayda, flee on a dangerous journey in search of a new land to call home after their peaceful kingdom is attacked. Timoken lives in two worlds: the world of men and the world of magic. How does he use his two magical gifts—a protective cloak made from the web of the last moon spider and a potion for youth called Alixir—to protect him and his sister when the viridees attack? The veridees are evil creatures from the realm of enchantments that desperately seek the protective cloak. This is an action-oriented, magical adventure filled with an excellent sense of tension and foreboding throughout the story. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith

Gr 4–6—Charlie Bone returns to introduce the story of his magical ancestor, Timoken the Red King. Born under the cloud of his mother's overwhelming sense of foreboding, Timoken finds protection and magic in three gifts given to his mother by a mysterious forest jinni: the web of the last moon spider, a magic ring, and the Alixir of youth. The powerful web does protect him, but it also invites danger, setting in motion events that will define his life. Readers will be instantly drawn into the author's captivating and thrilling tale of magic and adventure. Timoken's story takes flight after his kingdom is destroyed by viridees, wicked sorcerers who want the moon spider's web. He's forced to travel the world in search of a "New Kingdom," but what readers will soon understand is that he is really searching for a home and all that it symbolizes. The protagonist is a kind and thoughtful hero who engenders respect and loyalty in those he meets. This is evidenced in his relationship with his camel, Gabar, and the ragtag group of children they rescue from slave traders. They, along with Timoken's sister, Zobayda, explore the meaning of friendship and family. And it is this recurring theme that drives the story. Charlie Bone fans can rest easy knowing that Nimmo does not disappoint as she spins her magical web in this well-paced and expertly crafted tale.—Mary Beth Rassulo, Ridgefield Library, CT

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
Fans of Jenny Nimmo's "Charlie Bone" series know that Charlie and his friends acquired their magical powers thanks to a shared bloodline with the legendary Red King. But of the Red King himself, little has been revealed—until now. With the "Chronicles of the Red King," Nimmo starts a brand new series that thrusts readers back to ancient Africa where an eleven-year-old boy named Timoken and his sister Zobayda are gifted with a magical cloak, ring, and elixir of immortality that grant them power to manipulate the weather and speak with animals—not to mention perpetual youth. Unfortunately, these powers make them constant targets of the Viridees, evil green-skinned creatures, who will stop at nothing to steal their magical gifts. Now, aided only by a friendly camel, the siblings must evade capture while searching for a place they can finally call home. Their quest will last centuries, and will put Timoken in touch with children who will play a pivotal role in his life—as well as the lives of his descendants. Readers already familiar with the mythology of the "Charlie Bone" universe will probably understand this novel better than the uninitiated. Nimmo's writing is also awkward at times and does not always do her admittedly creative ideas justice, as the novel frequently speeds through entire centuries, only beginning to offer a coherent plot by Disc Three of this five-disc audio book. Nevertheless, the constant action and frequent displays of magic should please fans of Charlie Bone (who makes brief cameo appearances in the book although he does not contribute much to the plot). Keating's narration is competent and he is particularly adept at creating character voices for Timoken and his grumpy camel companion Gabar. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD

    OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a huge Charlie Bone fan and I can't wait for this to come out. Jenny Nimmo is a brilliant authoress who really knows how to capture a childs attention (I read them at age ten {well except for book eight which came out last year}_ I'm twelve and now I've read most of Nimmo's work.) Although I must say that sometimes she could have done better in how sha said things,
(Ex.): Lucretia saton the sofa, and Lucretia said,.
as opposed to a better form of: Lucretia sat on the sofa and said.

But Nimmo is an excellent author and I'm sure I can't wait for the secret kingdom.
