"I was born in Chicago and, twenty-five years later, grew up in the West." Recent college grad Tom Groneberg is faced with the traditional choices available to young people with his background: land a corporate job or attend graduate school. Instead, Tom answers a want ad: "Hard work with horses in a beautiful setting. Call for more info." Thus begins his transformation from suburban college boy into an honest western cowboy.
Tom gets the job and becomes a wrangler, leading tourists on trail rides in the hills of Colorado. There, he must work equally well with the frivolous vacationers and the terse but compassionate rancher who shows Tom the ropes, and refrains from criticizing the dearth of his useful skills. Tom's first disappointment? His immediate and humbling downgrade from a mustang named Spirit to a smaller horse, Bandanna.
After marrying his college girlfriend, Tom takes on a ranch of his own in Montana, where he and his wife face a number of unexpected challenges. Living with the breathtaking highs and spirit-breaking lows of America's last frontier, Tom comes to accept that while dreams may come true, they always come with a price -- and that sometimes that price is too high. Thank you, Tom Groneberg, for sharing your painfully honest story and your life lessons with us. (Summer 2003 Selection)
