Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Everything you have ever wanted to know about cave dwellers is contained in this well-written book, part of the "Secret Lives" animal science series. The author starts out with basic information about trogloxenes (cave guests), troglophiles (cave lovers), and troglobites (cave dwellers). She then provides specific examples of each type of cave animal, describing their appearances, their survival techniques, and their positions in the food chain. Where appropriate, she also links the survival of these animals to the health of the overall environment and mankind. In the back of the book is a glossary, index, and list of additional books, DVDs, and Internet sites for reference. This is not simply a book of facts about animals that dwell in caves. Instead, it tells the life stories of these animals in prose that is clear, readable, and enthusiastic. The author uses many techniques to engage the reader, such as posing questions and providing sidebars containing useful and unusual information. The photographs are amazing, and help illustrate concepts explained in the text. Junior scientists will not only enjoy reading this book, they will also learn about some of nature's most mysterious and little-known creatures. Reviewer: Leona Illig
