Children's Literature - Judy Crowder
It is said that more is known about outer space than our own deep oceans. What is the shape of the sea floor? What sorts of animals live there and how are their bodies adapted to such a dark, cold environment? How can humans safely study deep ocean habitats? This book, part of the "Secret Lives of" series, explains that the deep ocean has four zones: the top, epipelagic zone, that goes down to 600 feet, mesopelagic, down to 3,300 feet, the "deep sea" bathypelagic zone (to 13,000 feet), the "bottomless sea" or abyssopelagic zone (to 20,000feet), and finally to the hadal zone, the deepest part of the ocean, that goes to the sea floor—sometimes to trenches almost 36,000 feet. Each of these zones has its own remarkable creatures, from angler fish to colossal squids to sea spiders and the book does a wonderful job of discussing the wildlife in each zone. Text is well-written, and accompanies remarkable photo illustrations, as well as a list of words to know, books and internet sites from which to learn more and an extensive index. A creative classroom project after studying this book might be to paint a giant mural on paper (or use sidewalk chalk outside) or pass out modeling clay to form deep sea critters.
