Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever… unless fate steps in with a second chance.

One ‘Dear John’ letter haunted Bobby Baker’s every living moment. It was the letter he’d stupidly written to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he had left to join the Army. The letter in which he’d told her that he wasn’t so sure they were ready for forever yet. Before he could let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, were nothing more than a mistake, she disappeared from the small Georgia town they had both been raised in.

Fifteen years after the letter, Belle unknowingly walked back into Bobby’s life when her job as an ATF Agent forced her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever was involved in funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.

Bobby planned to use this mission to try to soothe Belle’s hurt feelings while proving to her that their love was meant to be forever. He would use every dirty trick he’d learned since he had joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. Belle was not making it easy, though, as she continued to keep him at arm’s length in the hopes that mistakes of her own would never come to light.

I love a strong woman who can handle a gun. I love a best friend that can kick a guy in the ass when they are about to royally screw up something that could be really great. "There was so much to love about this book. Of course, there is the whole action plot line of the gun smuggling. I love that it wasn't just some reason to throw these two together, it is actually followed through on, and in a very exciting way! And of course, you have the part where Bobby is working his tail off to even just speak to Belle. But then there is more! There are secrets here, and where there are secrets, you know there is a good story!"

Teenage love¿Bobby and Belle are high school sweethearts deep in

Teenage love…Bobby and Belle are high school sweethearts deep in love.  When Bobby joins the military he promises to return and that they will live happily ever after.  He then writes Belle a “Dear John” letter that forever changes both their lives.

Fifteen years later, Belle and Bobby meet again when their respective jobs join forces to track down whoever is taking black market guns to Mexico.  Bobby decides that he has to make their relationship right and vows to win back Belle’s trust.

I have to start by saying I LOVE JESSIE LANE!  The ladies who write as Jessie Lane are amazingly talented and have never let me down.

This is a story of first loves and second chances.  Secret Maneuvers kept me having to read more and more.  I thought I knew what Bobby would need to do to win back Belle and then he would go past what I was thinking making me go Awwwww….how romantic, or sexy, or sweet.  When I say sexy, I really mean hot blow your mind sexy.  Those had to be my favorite scenes.

Belle is an amazing character.  Her strength and resolve to do the right thing and escape her rough past makes her a true hero.  When it was told that she was an ATF agent.  I knew she would be okay.  I was just hoping she would get to the place where she was okay with Bobby.

Bobby, sexy Bobby, made me mad so many times.  First with the letter.  Then it seemed that he blamed Belle for disappearing and not trying to make their relationship work.  But when he decided to own up to his mistakes and win back Belle I fell in love with him.  He was a character I want to throttle out of frustration and then crawl into bed with him.

Jessie Lane gave me everything I wanted and more with this book.  I cannot wait for more to be shared about character s in this novel.    If you have never read Jessie Lane’s books, any of her books, you are seriously missing out and great reading.  I recommend anything written by these ladies.

This is not like any other romance book I have ever read. This book was done in a style even though forth coming in the steamy departments, drew me in and I could not put it down. I was so caught up with the characters and not just the main characters. Each one of them played such and important part for they were just like our own friends and family that are apart of our own lives.... I found myself inpatient as to what was going to happen next. In some parts I hated Bobby and felt sorry Bella and than it would switch. Oh my God! So many ranges of emotions this book puts you through ..You can also understand each point of view to the point of where you just want to slap yourself or them to say" hey wake up, everybody can not be right here"!!!..But then maybe they are.... This book also was dedicated to all who serve us to keep our world a safer place. It brings into focus that they are also human with all the emotions and the screw-ups as everyone else. It reminds us about the ones they leave behind to keep the home fires burning and that every day decisions can be life altering which affects so many people... This book blends the two with dignity, honor and humor which reminds all of us the struggles and the complexity of what we call the human race .. Secret Maneuvers also gives us all hope that second chances are within reach only if we open our hearts an minds so we can see them. Without giving any more away of the story line. I give Secret Maneuvers five big stars for its ability to capture the true spirt of relationships and how complex they are. Jessie Lane incorporated the complex in an extraordinary action pack and very exciting chain of events which will keep you spell bound. I will be waiting on pins and needles for their next release of this series and follow all their series from young adult to adult story lines. I am their number one fan and can't wait to see what else they will come up.... So don't wait get this one soon it will leave you more than breathless... This is a 5 Star read so get it soon.

Sometimes love needs a second chance.

This is a riveting tale that you will grab your attention and hold on until the very last page. With an exciting mix of emotional romance and high stakes action this book is a perfect match for any romance lover.

Belle is a kick ass heroine who I really enjoyed getting to know. She's made mistakes, but doesn't let them get her down. Even when shes working she knows how to have a good time. I also liked that she didn't let Bobby get his way even though she loved him. They are really fun together and their banter is one of my favorite parts of the book. It was also very nice to see how much Belle grew not only since she last saw Bobby, but throughout the book as well. She became a stronger woman and a better person instead of letting bad decisions make her bitter they made her stronger.

Bobby was a fun character as well. He had also grown a lot through the years and even though he could be a bit thick headed you could tell he cared for Belle deeply. His efforts to gain back Belle's trust while sometimes crazy and comical were also sweet and I think Belle knew deep down that she would always love Bobby. I loved his fun loving attitude and how sweet he could be when it came to Belle.

This is an exciting romance that will knock you off your feet!

The Story: Secret Maneuvers is the first book in Jessie Lane¿s

    The Story:

Secret Maneuvers is the first book in Jessie Lane’s Ex Ops series. It is, as you would expect from the title, a romantic suspense tale about a team of ex-military or ex-alphabet agency men who, for whatever reason, are no longer working for their original teams. Because of their outstanding, specialized skills, these men have been recruited by Ex Ops – an organization secretly headed by the CIA - to do the jobs Uncle Sam wants to deny having any part of.

What the title doesn’t tell you is what a fantastic, riveting story this is.

Right from the start it grabs hold of your heart and doesn’t let go. The prologue had me shedding a few tears as Belle’s heart is broken by her one true love, the man who promised he’d never hurt her, one of only two people she’s every truly trusted. They were madly in love, but still too young to be making “forever” promises, so when Belle gets Bobby’s letter breaking it off, she does the only thing she can do to protect herself from ever being crushed again. She runs.

It didn’t take long for Bobby to realize what a fool he was, but by the time he’d decided to beg her forgiveness, his Belle was gone. Private Investigators, Internet searches… nothing turned up a single clue about where she might be. He never stopped loving her, never stopped beating himself up for being such a fool, but eventually, he stopped looking for the girl who didn’t want to be found.

Fast forward fifteen years to an operation involving the ATF and Bobby’s Ex Ops team who are working together to track down the people responsible for funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico. As the Fates would have it, Belle is the ATF Agent in charge of the operation, and Bobby’s not about to let her go again. She doesn’t want anything to do with him, but Bobby’s made it his mission to change her mind.

    My Review:

It's not often I find a book that I can't put down. I mean, seriously can't put down, but Secret Maneuvers is honestly one of the best “second chance” romances I’ve read. It’s fast paced, funny, romantic and more than a little sexy. The world Ms. Lane has created is an exciting one, filled with complex characters who are just screaming for a story of their own. Bobby and Belle are great together, and despite my unhappiness with some of the things Bobby said to her after learning her secret, I couldn’t help but cheer them on as they fought their fears – and each other – and worked towards their happily ever after.

The bottom line: Fans of romantic suspense, you do not want to miss this story, and that’s all you need to know. Trust me on this – just buy the book, sit back and enjoy!

My thanks to Jessie Lane for providing me with a copy of this awesome story. Truly, thank you.

    Good story overall.

In the beginning I liked the main character of Bobby but by the middle of the book I thought he was just a big whiny crybaby. He blamed all their problems on Belle when it was just as much his fault. I liked Belle. She was strong and to be honest I wished she would have ended up with Charlie instead. I actually bought the book so I finished it.

Secret Maneuvers was not only my first book ever by the writing

Secret Maneuvers was not only my first book ever by the writing duo Melissa Pahl and Crystal Leo aka Jessie Lane, but I think this series could find itself among my favorites for romantic suspense. The story begins with a scene from Bobby and Annabelle’s past. The hometown golden boy and the trailer park bad girl. It’s Bobby’s last night as a free man before leaving for Army boot camp. In just a few pages we get the extent of their relationship, their bond, and their future dreams. Everything seems perfect until one day it isn’t. Fast forward fifteen years later and Bobby is now a part of an elite Ex Ops teams headed by the CIA. When their next mission involves working with the ATF, he comes face to face with the girl he never should have left behind, but the reunion is anything but warm. In fact, it’s downright frosty.

As they work together to investigate black market sales of firearms being smuggled to a Mexican drug cartel, they also have to come to terms with their past. Belle has been keeping a big secret from Bobby. Will he forgive her when he discovers what it is, or will he lose her forever through the dangers of their jobs and his stubbornness?

This book never got boring. Ever. Between the mission, Bobby’s attempts to get her alone for five minutes to talk, Bobby’s boys giving him a hard time, and Belle’s unwavering refusal to listen to a word Bobby had to say, there was never a dull moment. The first half of the book dealt mainly with the elephant in the room, and then her secret was revealed. Things go from interesting to “uh oh” in a heart beat, and suddenly the roles have switched. I could sympathize with both of them, however I definitely found myself on Bobby’s side throughout the story. Around the 80% mark is when the action really goes down. It was gritty, uncomfortable and had me white-knuckling my poor Kindle.

If there was anything I had an issue with, it was everyone’s treatment of Bobby after Belle was rescued. He didn’t have a lot of time or freedom to completely process the changes in his life, but everyone kept yelling at him for hurting Belle’s feelings. In my opinion, what Bobby did wasn’t all that terrible. He was young, impulsive and scared – good intentions, crappy timing. The fact that he tried to make things right two weeks later was more than enough to redeem him. I especially disliked Teagan. Yes, she was Belle’s champion and she had a good reason to be very protective of Belle, but her animosity wasn’t the friendly type of “if you hurt her, I’ll rip your testicles off and feed them to you” kind of needling. The ending was a little cheesy, but it was perfect for our couple and brought the story full circle.

Overall, I loved this story, and can’t wait for the rest of the series and the men of Ex Ops. The story flowed well, it was told from both Bobby and Belle’s first person alternating POV. The chemistry between them was believable even with the underlying hostility, and the sex … oh so HOT! I also thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue. The other men from Ex Ops made enough of an impression that I’m already invested in them and want their stories right now. I would never have guessed this book was penned by two people instead of one.

Warning: There is a torture and rape scene around the 80% mark. They aren’t graphic, but you might want to skip that part if it’s something that is a trigger for you.

My final rating 4 to 4.5

Wow...just...wow...First loves are something that I think we all have a special place in our hearts for...so what if that love wanted a second chance? This book kept me on the edge of my seat for so much of it, and even when I knew or had an idea of what might be coming, the way it unfolded was so much better/tragic/wonderful than I could've dreamed. I lost track of how many times this book brought me to tears one moment and had me laughing the next.

I was offered a copy of in exchange for my honest review.

We all make mistakes. I don't think those mistakes are any more obvious than when we are teenagers. Bobby loved Belle and wanted to spend his life loving and protecting her. However, when he left to join the army things took a different route. He wrote a Dear John letter that nearly destroyed Belle. With no one in their hometown to protect her, she ran.

A lifetime down the road and Belle has become a strong and independent ATF agent that happens to run into Bobby on a case. The sparks fly with the passion, love and pain with these two incredible souls. Belle wants to forgive Bobby but that kind of soul deep betrayal is hard to come back from. The better question is can Bobby forgive Belle for her betrayal as well?

Words can't describe how amazingly enthralled I am with Secret Maneuvers! This story had everything I look for in a book, passion, intrigue, suspense, violence and love. Second chances don't always come around and when they do you have to hold on tight and not let go. Bobby and Belle have a love that has come through hell and back and deserve their chance at forever.

SECRET MANUEVERS by Jessie Lane surprised and impressed me with

SECRET MANUEVERS by Jessie Lane surprised and impressed me with its first person point of view from the angle of two different characters. We not only experience the events of this story that puts two people with a past back together from Belle’s point of view, but also from Bobby’s point of view. It is a refreshing take on a first person-writing format but it’s also a wonderful and unique way to experience the emotion and passion of two people who never stopped loving each other even though so many things have driven them apart. I expected a story with action, alpha males aplenty, and danger lurking in the background and got all of that, but the passion that plays out between Belle and Bobby is incredible, touching, heart wrenching, and at times very poignant. We experience a woman’s insecurities that she still carries with her since her youth yet sees her demonstrate strength and compassion that helps her survive a dangerous and life-threatening situation. After surviving that, she faces the pain and heartache of forever losing the man she loves because of the secret that she kept from him for fifteen years. Belle is her own woman yet still struggles with the effects of a brutal father and the world she came from even as she proves herself as strong and tough as any man.

I highly recommend SECRET MANEUVERS, an ExOps novel by Jessie Lane to anyone who can appreciate the duty that drives men and women who put themselves in the line of fire to halt illegal activity and save the innocent. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a second chance romance that will have you hoping that a happily ever after can still be had even after the pain of betrayal seems beyond recovery.

Oh, one more thing – if you’re wondering about the strange green tint to the cover, don’t worry, it will all make sense after you read the book. : ) ***eARC provided by authors in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

Give this new author and series a try!

Annabelle Smith was the girl from the trailer park, hardened by years with an alcoholic father.  The only love Annabelle has ever known is from her best friend, Teagan.

Bobby Baker is smart, athletic and from a good, normal family.  He could have any girl he wants so what would he want with Annabelle.  They were together for two years and on the eve of his leaving for boot camp, they spend the night together making love under the stars, and discussing their unbreakable bond and their plans for the future once Bobby has finished his training.

It was thirteen since Bobby left town and Belle hasn’t heard anything, but this last fight with her Dad has been too much.  If she doesn’t get away from him now, he’ll probably kill her.  Maybe Bobby’s parents will take her in?  When she shows up at their door, his Mom has a letter for Belle which just arrived from Bobby.   A letter which shatters Belle’s heart when the one person she thought could actually love someone like her, tells her that he doesn’t want that forever they always talked about.

Now fifteen years later, the ATF is looking for help with a dangerous drug cartel that is smuggling automatic riffles and drugs between the U.S. and Mexico, and they need to work with the Government’s EX opts division.  Imagine Bobby Baker’s surprise when Belle walks in the door to brief his team. Bobby has been searching for Belle since he was stupid enough to send a letter to the love of his life telling her they could not be together, but he tried to take it back and tell her how sorry he was for saying those things, but Annabelle had left town, left Georgia and no matter how many time he sent out a private investigator, they never returned with any information.  It was like she dropped off the face of the earth, until she walked back into his life and looked right through him like he wasn’t even there.

Does she really think he’s going to let her walk away from him again after it has taken him 15 years to find her again?   He needs her to know that he sent another letter begging her forgiveness.  That he’s been searching frantically for her all these years.  That he has never felt whole since she disappeared from his life.

Annabelle knows there will be no other love for her but Bobby, but she isn’t the same unwanted girl he left behind.  Her life has changed since the day she read his letter, and after all the pain, lies and secrets, she’s not sure if there ever can be a Happily Ever After for them.

This was a wonderful, emotional story with very realistic characters.  I was absolutely heartbroken for Annabelle.  She finally gave her fragile heart to someone who she believed was too good for an unloved girl from the trailer park, in a town where no one  has a good word for her, and she was amazed that Bobby would actually want forever with her.  Then she receives the letter which tells her that he doesn’t want forever with her anymore, that they were too young, haven’t experienced any of the world, and they shouldn’t be thinking of forever so soon.

This is the second book that I have read from the very promising writing team of Melissa Pahl and Crystal Leo, and although I wanted to jump into the story and slap Bobby around a little, good writing makes you feel even if that feeling is angry.

First loves, second chances, and too many heart-stopping moments to count!! Secret Maneuvers is without a doubt sure to be a huge hit, because this story is romance magic from page one up until the very end!! Whether they were tender or filled with raw emotion, hilarious or beautiful, this was just one of those stories that gives you a little of everything to endure and enjoy!
Bobby and Belle were the kind of couple that just NEEDED to be together. Regardless of their very different backgrounds, or maybe even because of them, there was just no denying that these two people were absolutely meant to be together. As young loves they were each other's world, he her knight in shining armor and she his breath of fresh air. The moment he changed everything with that letter, Belle's heart was just demolished. It was such a stab in the chest, and I felt it right along with her as she tried to pull herself together and be strong. She spent so much of this story being the strong one, keeping her heart wrapped up tight and covered in barbed wire so she won't have to hurt again. I just adored her, and when her big secret was revealed I found it easy to forgive her decision. She had suffered through years of abuse, and she was facing her future after the only man she'd ever loved abandoned her. In my mind, that's an automatic free pass to make some mistakes!

It didn't take long for me to fall for Bobby, I mean I'd be drool-swooning over this sexy military man even if it weren't for that deliciously tempting cover! With a heart of gold and the determination every woman dreams of having aimed straight her way, he was not about to give up on the woman he loved without proving to her he would make up for the pain he'd caused her. He was tough and rugged on the outside, but deep down he was just a big old softie when it came to his Belle and I loved it!!

I was surprised by how intense the action and suspense became, especially since the reader is lulled into this sense of security even though you know what Bobby, Belle, and their teams are doing is dangerous. They are going after some extremely violent, soulless people who don't think twice about killing and torturing, and as the action picks up it becomes painfully clear just how far these despicable people will go. It's not for the faint of heart, for sure, but it was such a thrilling shift in the tone of the story that had me holding my breath in anticipation.

Kudos to the Jessie Lane gals for packing Secret Maneuvers full of all the things a reader could ask for in an unforgettable romance, because it made for one incredible story! I can not wait to get more of these amazing characters with the next book in this series, including some fabulous supporting characters that I hope to see again!

***I had the pleasure to beta read this book. I provided feedback while reading. The opinions stated in this review are my own and were not influenced by getting an advanced copy of this book***

I read this book in pieces and it was torture. Absolute torture. I knew I was a goner when the PROLOGUE made me tear up. And really it was over before it started. Knowing it was a Contemporary Romance gave me a tiny hint of relief that the likelihood of a happily ever after was pretty high but I had no clue how Bobby and Belle would get there.

I have never been more anxious to read the next chapter. It would sometimes be a week OR MORE before I could get it. It was torture waiting for those chapters. I would find myself dreaming about Bobby, wondering if he would ever get his girl back. Wondering what Belle's problem was; couldn't she see he was sorry?

And then Bobby's feet were knocked out from under him in the most surprising way and I was left sitting there, speechless, for hours. My stomach dropped out and I just - had no words. If I could have jumped into that book to smack some heads together and comfort Bobby. you better believe I wouldn't think twice about leaving my husband to jump in there.

This is another one of those stories that I find it hard to convey the emotions I had without discussing the reasons for those emotions - hurt, sad, angry, hopeful, anxious, scared, nauseous, relieved - any book that can put me through the ringer as thoroughly as Secret Maneuvers did is one I will recommend to EVERYONE. Even if you don't think you like Contemporary Romance, you will like this.
