Overview

Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever... unless fate steps in with a second chance.

One 'Dear John' letter haunted Bobby Baker's every living moment. It was the letter he'd stupidly written to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he had left to join the Army. The letter in which he'd told her that he wasn't so sure they were ready for forever yet. Before he could let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, were nothing more than a mistake, she disappeared from the small Georgia town they had both been raised in.

Fifteen years after the letter, Belle unknowingly walked back into Bobby's life when her job as an ATF Agent forced her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever was involved in funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.

Bobby planned to use this mission to try to soothe Belle's hurt feelings while proving to her that their love was meant to be forever. He would use every dirty trick he'd learned since he had joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. Belle was not making it easy, though, as she continued to keep him at arm's length in the hopes that mistakes of her own would never come to light.

Editorial Reviews

http://littlereadridinghood.com/ - Laura at Little Read Riding Hood
"This is another one of those stories that I find it hard to convey the emotions I had without discussing the reasons for those emotions - hurt, sad, angry, hopeful, anxious, scared, nauseous, relieved - any book that can put me through the ringer as thoroughly as Secret Maneuvers did is one I will recommend to EVERYONE. Even if you don't think you like Contemporary Romance, you will like this."
http://www.autumnreview.com/ - Erin from The Autumn Review
"First loves, second chances, and too many heart-stopping moments to count! Secret Maneuvers is without a doubt sure to be a huge hit, because this story is romance magic from page one up until the very end! There were just so many great moments and lines that I wanted to go back to! Whether they were tender or filled with raw emotion, hilarious or beautiful, this was just one of those stories that gives you a little of everything to endure and enjoy!"
http://www.fictionalcandy.com/ - Liz from Fictional Candy
"There was so much to love about this book. Of course, there is the whole action plot line of the gun smuggling. I love that it wasn't just some reason to throw these two together, it is actually followed through on, and in a very exciting way! And of course, you have the part where Bobby is working his tail off to even just speak to Belle. But then there is more! There are secrets here, and where there are secrets, you know there is a good story!"
http://www.mrsconditreadsbooks.com/ - Lady McNeill from Mrs Condit & Friends Reads Books
"Overall an excellent love lost and love found again story. The characters were all very likable. I love a man that can express his love in words and actions. I love a strong woman who can handle a gun. I love a best friend that can kick a guy in the ass when they are about to royally screw up something that could be really great. Looking forward to hopefully more books in the series!"

Teenage love¿Bobby and Belle are high school sweethearts deep in

Teenage love…Bobby and Belle are high school sweethearts deep in love.  When Bobby joins the military he promises to return and that they will live happily ever after.  He then writes Belle a “Dear John” letter that forever changes both their lives.

Fifteen years later, Belle and Bobby meet again when their respective jobs join forces to track down whoever is taking black market guns to Mexico.  Bobby decides that he has to make their relationship right and vows to win back Belle’s trust.

I have to start by saying I LOVE JESSIE LANE!  The ladies who write as Jessie Lane are amazingly talented and have never let me down.

This is a story of first loves and second chances.  Secret Maneuvers kept me having to read more and more.  I thought I knew what Bobby would need to do to win back Belle and then he would go past what I was thinking making me go Awwwww….how romantic, or sexy, or sweet.  When I say sexy, I really mean hot blow your mind sexy.  Those had to be my favorite scenes.

Belle is an amazing character.  Her strength and resolve to do the right thing and escape her rough past makes her a true hero.  When it was told that she was an ATF agent.  I knew she would be okay.  I was just hoping she would get to the place where she was okay with Bobby.

Bobby, sexy Bobby, made me mad so many times.  First with the letter.  Then it seemed that he blamed Belle for disappearing and not trying to make their relationship work.  But when he decided to own up to his mistakes and win back Belle I fell in love with him.  He was a character I want to throttle out of frustration and then crawl into bed with him.

Jessie Lane gave me everything I wanted and more with this book.  I cannot wait for more to be shared about character s in this novel.    If you have never read Jessie Lane’s books, any of her books, you are seriously missing out and great reading.  I recommend anything written by these ladies.

This is not like any other romance book I have ever read. This book was done in a style even though forth coming in the steamy departments, drew me in and I could not put it down. I was so caught up with the characters and not just the main characters. Each one of them played such and important part for they were just like our own friends and family that are apart of our own lives.... I found myself inpatient as to what was going to happen next. In some parts I hated Bobby and felt sorry Bella and than it would switch. Oh my God! So many ranges of emotions this book puts you through ..You can also understand each point of view to the point of where you just want to slap yourself or them to say" hey wake up, everybody can not be right here"!!!..But then maybe they are.... This book also was dedicated to all who serve us to keep our world a safer place. It brings into focus that they are also human with all the emotions and the screw-ups as everyone else. It reminds us about the ones they leave behind to keep the home fires burning and that every day decisions can be life altering which affects so many people... This book blends the two with dignity, honor and humor which reminds all of us the struggles and the complexity of what we call the human race .. Secret Maneuvers also gives us all hope that second chances are within reach only if we open our hearts an minds so we can see them. Without giving any more away of the story line. I give Secret Maneuvers five big stars for its ability to capture the true spirt of relationships and how complex they are. Jessie Lane incorporated the complex in an extraordinary action pack and very exciting chain of events which will keep you spell bound. I will be waiting on pins and needles for their next release of this series and follow all their series from young adult to adult story lines. I am their number one fan and can't wait to see what else they will come up.... So don't wait get this one soon it will leave you more than breathless... This is a 5 Star read so get it soon.

Sometimes love needs a second chance.

This is a riveting tale that you will grab your attention and hold on until the very last page. With an exciting mix of emotional romance and high stakes action this book is a perfect match for any romance lover.

Belle is a kick ass heroine who I really enjoyed getting to know. She's made mistakes, but doesn't let them get her down. Even when shes working she knows how to have a good time. I also liked that she didn't let Bobby get his way even though she loved him. They are really fun together and their banter is one of my favorite parts of the book. It was also very nice to see how much Belle grew not only since she last saw Bobby, but throughout the book as well. She became a stronger woman and a better person instead of letting bad decisions make her bitter they made her stronger.

Bobby was a fun character as well. He had also grown a lot through the years and even though he could be a bit thick headed you could tell he cared for Belle deeply. His efforts to gain back Belle's trust while sometimes crazy and comical were also sweet and I think Belle knew deep down that she would always love Bobby. I loved his fun loving attitude and how sweet he could be when it came to Belle.

This is an exciting romance that will knock you off your feet!

The Story: Secret Maneuvers is the first book in Jessie Lane¿s

    The Story:

Secret Maneuvers is the first book in Jessie Lane’s Ex Ops series. It is, as you would expect from the title, a romantic suspense tale about a team of ex-military or ex-alphabet agency men who, for whatever reason, are no longer working for their original teams. Because of their outstanding, specialized skills, these men have been recruited by Ex Ops – an organization secretly headed by the CIA - to do the jobs Uncle Sam wants to deny having any part of.

What the title doesn’t tell you is what a fantastic, riveting story this is.

Right from the start it grabs hold of your heart and doesn’t let go. The prologue had me shedding a few tears as Belle’s heart is broken by her one true love, the man who promised he’d never hurt her, one of only two people she’s every truly trusted. They were madly in love, but still too young to be making “forever” promises, so when Belle gets Bobby’s letter breaking it off, she does the only thing she can do to protect herself from ever being crushed again. She runs.

It didn’t take long for Bobby to realize what a fool he was, but by the time he’d decided to beg her forgiveness, his Belle was gone. Private Investigators, Internet searches… nothing turned up a single clue about where she might be. He never stopped loving her, never stopped beating himself up for being such a fool, but eventually, he stopped looking for the girl who didn’t want to be found.

Fast forward fifteen years to an operation involving the ATF and Bobby’s Ex Ops team who are working together to track down the people responsible for funneling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico. As the Fates would have it, Belle is the ATF Agent in charge of the operation, and Bobby’s not about to let her go again. She doesn’t want anything to do with him, but Bobby’s made it his mission to change her mind.

    My Review:

It's not often I find a book that I can't put down. I mean, seriously can't put down, but Secret Maneuvers is honestly one of the best “second chance” romances I’ve read. It’s fast paced, funny, romantic and more than a little sexy. The world Ms. Lane has created is an exciting one, filled with complex characters who are just screaming for a story of their own. Bobby and Belle are great together, and despite my unhappiness with some of the things Bobby said to her after learning her secret, I couldn’t help but cheer them on as they fought their fears – and each other – and worked towards their happily ever after.

The bottom line: Fans of romantic suspense, you do not want to miss this story, and that’s all you need to know. Trust me on this – just buy the book, sit back and enjoy!

My thanks to Jessie Lane for providing me with a copy of this awesome story. Truly, thank you.

Secret Maneuvers was not only my first book ever by the writing

Secret Maneuvers was not only my first book ever by the writing duo Melissa Pahl and Crystal Leo aka Jessie Lane, but I think this series could find itself among my favorites for romantic suspense. The story begins with a scene from Bobby and Annabelle’s past. The hometown golden boy and the trailer park bad girl. It’s Bobby’s last night as a free man before leaving for Army boot camp. In just a few pages we get the extent of their relationship, their bond, and their future dreams. Everything seems perfect until one day it isn’t. Fast forward fifteen years later and Bobby is now a part of an elite Ex Ops teams headed by the CIA. When their next mission involves working with the ATF, he comes face to face with the girl he never should have left behind, but the reunion is anything but warm. In fact, it’s downright frosty.

As they work together to investigate black market sales of firearms being smuggled to a Mexican drug cartel, they also have to come to terms with their past. Belle has been keeping a big secret from Bobby. Will he forgive her when he discovers what it is, or will he lose her forever through the dangers of their jobs and his stubbornness?

This book never got boring. Ever. Between the mission, Bobby’s attempts to get her alone for five minutes to talk, Bobby’s boys giving him a hard time, and Belle’s unwavering refusal to listen to a word Bobby had to say, there was never a dull moment. The first half of the book dealt mainly with the elephant in the room, and then her secret was revealed. Things go from interesting to “uh oh” in a heart beat, and suddenly the roles have switched. I could sympathize with both of them, however I definitely found myself on Bobby’s side throughout the story. Around the 80% mark is when the action really goes down. It was gritty, uncomfortable and had me white-knuckling my poor Kindle.

If there was anything I had an issue with, it was everyone’s treatment of Bobby after Belle was rescued. He didn’t have a lot of time or freedom to completely process the changes in his life, but everyone kept yelling at him for hurting Belle’s feelings. In my opinion, what Bobby did wasn’t all that terrible. He was young, impulsive and scared – good intentions, crappy timing. The fact that he tried to make things right two weeks later was more than enough to redeem him. I especially disliked Teagan. Yes, she was Belle’s champion and she had a good reason to be very protective of Belle, but her animosity wasn’t the friendly type of “if you hurt her, I’ll rip your testicles off and feed them to you” kind of needling. The ending was a little cheesy, but it was perfect for our couple and brought the story full circle.

Overall, I loved this story, and can’t wait for the rest of the series and the men of Ex Ops. The story flowed well, it was told from both Bobby and Belle’s first person alternating POV. The chemistry between them was believable even with the underlying hostility, and the sex … oh so HOT! I also thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue. The other men from Ex Ops made enough of an impression that I’m already invested in them and want their stories right now. I would never have guessed this book was penned by two people instead of one.

Warning: There is a torture and rape scene around the 80% mark. They aren’t graphic, but you might want to skip that part if it’s something that is a trigger for you.

My final rating 4 to 4.5

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

    Good story overall.

In the beginning I liked the main character of Bobby but by the middle of the book I thought he was just a big whiny crybaby. He blamed all their problems on Belle when it was just as much his fault. I liked Belle. She was strong and to be honest I wished she would have ended up with Charlie instead. I actually bought the book so I finished it.

    230 pages recommend

I wanted to throttle Bobby, he blames Belle for everything. 230 pages that keep you enthralled to the last page. I' m not sure how Belle could forgive Bobby for his dear john letter and then say such mean & hateful things to her when he was the reason she ran away in the first place. But all wells that ends well, I would read this book again. GJRA

I should state going into this review that I’m biased because I am a Jessie Lane fan, I love their paranormal Big Bad Bite Series and Walk on the Striped Side is one of my all-time favourite shifter books.

So …………….. The Ex Ops Series

    Secret Maneuvers

I read Secret Maneuvers some time ago but reread it this week before Stripping Her Defenses, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it – fast paced, well executed, damn fine secondary characters as always and leaving you wanting more.
Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever… unless fate steps in with a second chance.

One ‘Dear John’ letter haunted Bobby Baker’s every living moment. It was the letter he’d stupidly written to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he had left to join the Army. The letter in which he’d told her that he wasn’t so sure they were ready for forever yet. Before he could let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, were nothing more than a mistake, she disappeared from the small Georgia town they had both been raised in.
Fifteen years after the letter, Belle unknowingly walked back into Bobby’s life when her job as an ATF Agent forced her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever was involved in funnelling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.

Bobby planned to use this mission to try to soothe Belle’s hurt feelings while proving to her that their love was meant to be forever. He would use every dirty trick he’d learned since he had joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. Belle was not making it easy, though, as she continued to keep him at arm’s length in the hopes that mistakes of her own would never come to light.

Not gonna lie, there were times I wanted to take a baseball bat to Bobby and inflict some serious damage! But this a story of second chances (more than two in Bobby’s case!), first loves and what ifs all interwoven into a military action story.

“Ever since I met you, even my feet stopped belonging to me and became yours because all they ever seem to want to do is travel to wherever you are. My heart only lives and beats when you’re where I can see you. Touch you. Kiss your lips and show you the physical equivalent of how deeply I love you. My soul f*cking died after I sent that stupid letter and you disappeared. I’ve spent the last fifteen years walking around as a shell. Not a living, breathing human, but a robot going through the everyday motions. You were, are, and will always be more than my life. More than my beating heart, or any other physical reaction my body has. You’re my everything, my f*cking essence. I cease to exist unless I’m with you.”

I really felt for Belle and Bobby through their reconnection because life is messy and complicated, sometimes the decisions we make while right at that particular time have far reaching consequences that you cannot anticipate or foresee. Belle at first comes across as an incredibly strong woman and it’s not until Teagan and Seth have their say with Bobby that we realise life has hurt her more than she shows.
Bobby’s reaction to the news of what he has missed and some of his subsequent behaviour is where my friend Slugger and I wanted to get to know him! But Jessie Lane then writes pieces like that above and you want to forgive him, you want him to give Belle that happy ever after and for them to have the family life together they should always have had. Bobby frustrated me for a fair amount of the book, however, I still enjoyed it and even on the reread didn’t skim any.

The secondary characters were as outstanding as always, special mention has to go to Declan just because it’s Declan! Jaxon and his observations on relationships and military tactics were very funny, subtle and almost scary!

A Solid Four Star Read for me

    A great read!

I loved the dynamic between the two main characters. I was also emotionally attached to their love story and I admit even cried at a point. A great read and I'm thankful to have stumbled across this. If you are like me and go by reviews, I highly recommend this unexpected, sweet, crazy love story.

Wow...just...wow...First loves are something that I think we all have a special place in our hearts for...so what if that love wanted a second chance? This book kept me on the edge of my seat for so much of it, and even when I knew or had an idea of what might be coming, the way it unfolded was so much better/tragic/wonderful than I could've dreamed. I lost track of how many times this book brought me to tears one moment and had me laughing the next.
