Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Woo
As part of the "Difficult and Dangerous" series, this book details some of the most famous undercover operations in history. The chapters center on the Pinkerton Detective Agency, Violette Szabo, Dusan Popov, John Howard Griffin, and Gary Powers. These compelling stories take place in different contexts such as the Civil War, the Nazis and World War II, and racism and segregation in the South. The Pinkerton Detective Agency was one of the first private investigative companies in the United States and was even hired as security for Abraham Lincoln. Violette Szabo served the British Special Operations Executive to help sabotage the Nazis and was captured and executed in a concentration camp. John Howard Griffin chose to investigate racism by tinting his skin and walking around in disguise as an African American man. During his time undercover, he discovered what it meant to be a third class citizen. The book includes detailed illustrations as well as photographs. There are interactive elements including writing exercises, quizzes, and fun spy games. There is also a glossary of terms at the back of the book and websites for further reading. This book is educational and engaging. It is a great way to discuss the exciting elements of undercover operations, but also the historical and cultural background of such operations.
