Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - C. Dennette Michaels
Bolton telling of the successful coming of age of Prince Marlon who realizes that his ailing father is controlled by a power-hungry minister. The prince leaves the palace, lives incognito to search for personal answers to running a country, meets "the girl"-Nicole, returns to the palace, saves king and kingdom, vanquishes a snake-like minister, and achieves a happy-ever with Nicole as his queen. Bolton devises a class visit to a castle with an unknown history, save what can be "read" from its gallery of paintings, during which two independently-minded children stray. The book's story becomes the castle's truth as Morlon's father's trusted adviser, appearing as a quaintly dressed historical guide recounts it for these children., . The portraits become Jerman's full-page illustrations Though Bolton's songwriter ability does not provide the rhythm of language such a tale needs, his book does something unusual. His clear enunciation of how Prince Marlon grows into the life and death power conferred by his birth, strips bare the reasoning process by which all power holders, elected or born, make the decisions inherent in power over subjects, children, or voters Jerman's first attempt at a picture book. appears successful,. Nicole at her mirror seems hauntingly Vermeer-like.
