Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
In this eightieth anniversary edition of the first book in the "Nancy Drew Mystery Stories," Nancy Drew stumbles upon her first mystery when she narrowly misses hitting a small girl with her car. The young girl's impoverished caretakers, Ida and Mary Turner, reveal to Nancy that they are the relatives of the wealthy and recently deceased Josiah Turner, who had promised them riches when he died, but they had received nothing from his will. Nancy runs into several other poor relatives and friends of Josiah Crowley, who also say they had been promised money in Josiah's will, but the only copy that turned up was held by Crowley's arrogant and unkind relations, the Tophams. Nancy becomes intrigued when she learns that Josiah had mentioned to one of his relatives that he had written another will and hidden it where no one would find it. She vows to uncover the secret. Eventually, clues lead Nancy to Josiah's antique clock, which had been moved to the Tophams' summer cottage. Nancy overcomes many obstacles, not the least of which is being locked in a closet by thieves and left to starve, but eventually escapes, finds the clock and the missing will, and helps each of the Crowley's deserving relatives receive what Crowley had initially promised them. She also has the satisfaction of seeing the snobby Tophams brought down a peg or two in the process. This first novel, written in 1930, is more interesting as a period piece than as a mystery. Young readers will probably find the mystery of the old clock pretty tame, but as generations of readers have learned, the appeal of the smart and lovely Nancy Drew is irresistible.
