P.T.Barnum was Right and this book is proof of it.

I am 75 and have been reading 50-60 books a year since I retired. I resisted reading "The Secret" for a very long time but finally gave in to curiosity in that I wanted to see what all the excitement was about and what would cause it to remain on the best seller lists for such a long period. I am sorry to report that there is no secret. Norman Vincent Peale told us all we needed to know about the power of positve thinking back in the '50s and the "law of attraction" is nothing but new age psycho-babble. What an incredible waste of time and money. H.L.Mencken once wrote "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public". I don't know whether the author is incredibly cynical or the victim of an, as of yet, undiagnosed mental illness but this book is a clear demonstration of the concept that good marketing can sell anything. I must admit that I am no fan of "New Age" pseudo-philosophy. Nevertheless, I tried my best to read with an open mind and assumed that the success of this book must indicate SOME socially redeeming features. The "ideas" are simplistic, superficial and repetitive and the only "secret" of this unfortunate book is that the author has been made a multi-millionaire and the reading public has been bamboozled and is too dazzled or embarassed to admit that the emperor has no clothes. This book is the written equivalent of snake-oil however cleverly marketed. If anyone is truly interested in an inspirational book, much better to spend your time, money and emotional energy on "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith.

    Don't Be Fooled!

I read this book and my first impression was 'WOW!' Then I went one step further, and studied it. Then I felt sick! Not only does this book and DVD promise people they can become wealthy by just merely thinking it, they also suggest that in a catastrophic event, that the people who may have died or suffered in that event were all of one negative frequency! Does this mean that on 9/11 that every single person who died during that terrorist attack were all on the same negative frequency? I don't think so! It tells people who want to lose weight, not to observe overweight people because in doing so, they 'the ones who want to lose weight' will add more weight to themselves simply by observing other overweight people! Insane! They even go on to say 'by bringing the Bible into it for those of us who have faith in God' that Jesus was rich....huh???? If you buy this book, you are only going to be suckered like so many others. Actually...because I was curious...I even went to the Forum for The Secret and just read that these two people are SO positive they are going to win the lottery, just simply by being positive about it, that these two are actually quitting their jobs. If I see posts like this by these two, it makes me wonder how many out there are taking such foolish chances with their lives on false promises. The Universe is NOT a genie. You simply can not wish something and have the Universe say to you 'Your wish is my command!' If that were really true, we would all be rich, have perfect health, have perfect relationships...etc etc. I have recently tossed The Secret in the dump!

    A Re-Packaged Secret.

A movie first and then turned into a book, "The Secret" is about getting what you want by knowing what you want and keeping it at the forefront of your thoughts. It gets this concept across really well and is a quite entertaining book. The downside is that there is really nothing new here that hasn't already been published many times before, many decades ago (I'm thinking of books like It Works).

Thinking is great, but life also requires us to "do" a little too in order to make things happen- recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for more info on that.

    The Secret is my Bible

This book does not give any new concepts of how we can change our lives for the better it only RESTATES and COMPLIES all that we have heard here and there about positive thinking over the years. You always heard your mom and dad say "think positive", "you are special", "you can do anything - go for it" and so on. Rhonda Byrne simply tells us WHY our parents told us these things and HOW it happens - through Attraction. To all the critics, Rhonda is just helping us understand how we can change our lives for the better, just as our parents used to tell us we can grow up to be great - IT'S THE SAME THING. This book is the greatest book ever written, it has helped me to be more focused, and i have began looking to the future with great expeectations and things have already started to go in a positive direction for me and i know it will continue. Thankyou Rhonda for being unselfish and helping me to understand that, I am in control of my life, with positive thinking and belief in God, i can do anything.

    A Beneficial Book

The huge success of Rhonda Byrnes book "The Secret" speaks for itself. In reading some of the reviews I must admit it appears that some are simply "reactions" rather than true reviews. I found Ms Byrnes approach to be remarkably engaging and certainly provokes thought. Her references again and again to "Avatars.Teachers, and great Leaders through the ages shows she has painstakenly researched the truths that have had some of the greatest impact in the lives of significant numbers of people. She is not offering her insights or rather her restatement of old truths as a new manuscript of reference to compete with or replace the Bible. To me what she covers in the book are things many of us have discovered in our lives or the lives of others to be true. This is the crux of the matter, if something is true, there is a reason why it is true. If something works it becomes an established principle that repeats itself again and again when the principle is applied. It does not matter who said it or how it was said if it is effectual in it's results then it has special significance. In watching the video and also reading the book, I was impressed with the energy and inspiration that was being expressed. It certainly was not negative energy or blasphemy against God. It was a treatise of encouragement in positive thought, faith, love, and expectation of doing more, experiencing more, achieving more and with an almost childlike faith an obvious confidence that good things will come forth. Without going into detail the emphasis on the "law of attraction" proves itself in the lives of people everyday and has done so through the ages. I liked the book and found it beneficial. Does it cover all the points of doctrine or my personal beliefs in ways perhaps I am accustomed to? No but that does not appear to be its purpose. With one broad sweep the book covers some of the most important truths that can bring some of the greatest changes for good in peoples lives. That seems to be the real issue, has it helped anyone? Apparently, it has helped thousands in many different ways. We may have our various religious positions but sometimes some things are presented in ways that differ from our personal approach and yet they may produce enormous beneficial results. To me "The Secret" is one of those things. No one is asked to leave their church, turn their backs on the Bible or become members of any new kind of cult, they are simply reminded of things that have been known by some through the ages that are powerful when applied in one's life. Truly inspiring.

I was hesitant to ever buy the Secret as it seemed that because it was so popular, it couldn't actually work--wrong! I wish I had bought it when it first came out and devorued it then. There have been many others like it, and some are fantastic, but this is the real deal! Highly recommended.

Self-involved American individualism at its finest(/worst)

We live in a society that is ready to blame victims for anything and everything. It's because of our arrogant and self-obsessed attitudes, the kinds that this book glorifies. Clearly, six million Jews died in the Holocaust because they lacked positive energy - or maybe it was just that Hitler had it in spades. Clearly, starving children around the world simply don't want food enough - but sure, go on and *will* yourself a bigger paycheck or a marriage, because you want that more than the kid wants a loaf of bread. Clearly.

You Only Have One Life....READ THIS BOOK

This book makes absolute and complete sense. If you think about the principles it suggests, it all makes sense. I have read this book 3 times and each time I read it, I discover something new that I had previously missed. People who really want to make positive changes in their life and have a healthy, happy, prosperous and abundant life, will love this book. People who are happy only when they are miserable and want people to feel sorry for them and the grim circumstances of their life, will say it is nonsense and can never work. READ THIS BOOK. THINK LOGICALLY AND THOUGHTFULLY ABOUT WHAT IT IS SAYING. START SMALL AND APPLY THE PRINCIPLES. YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT HOW QUICKLY YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AND HOW MUCH HAPPIER, HEALTHIER and MORE ABUNDANT YOU WILL BE. But remember: if you harbour the least bit of skepticism or doubt, this will be a total waste of your time and money. Keep a happy and Positive attitude and you, too, will be telling everyone about THE SECRET. I applied the principles of the book and I am now marrying a wonderful man, my weight is no longer an issue and I am able to find money whenever I need it. It is so amazing. ANd the people around me have also felt the effects as a result of my positive and abundant attitude.

Takes an Open Mind to Advance

This selection is a great study base for the LAW of Attraction. Eventhough it is in a wide abbreviated form. It can be used to begin a wonderful journey of self-repair. I have bought over 20 copies and handed them out. Still buying them for folks who require a physical jump start into understanding the field of "you get what you think".

Well Done and Simple to follow. I recommend it to any and All ready to make great advances in self-improvement.

    Totally Not Right!

    THE SECRET by Rhoda Byrne

Have you ever wanted to know the secret of life? Don't look for it here. The book states that your thoughts will turn into things. It places you as creator of all and if you concentrate on a thought the Universe will align and turn that thought into existence. In reality you are not the creator and neither is your weird family member or your mean neighbor next door. Also, if you think about a new car don't expect the trees, grass and the ants in your yard to form that car.

The author even brings up one of the greatest points as to why this secret wouldn't work. You are told that once you have decided what you want you just ask for it once, think it, and then receive it. The author tells you there is a time delay so your thoughts will not come true instantly. She warns you to be careful what you think or you may get into trouble. Can you imagine what would happen to the guy who cuts you off while you were driving and you wished him dead? Relying on what a person thinks to attain riches, power, fame, your wants, etc. is ridiculous.

The book is filled with deception. It even tries to prove its point by bringing in Scripture verses and quotes from Martin Luther King, but each was used out of context. If you read this book read it as fiction. If you want The Secret of Life read The Bible.

So it's all my fault. I knew it!

The book is considered New Age for a reason. I'm all up for envisioning your future positively and imagining all the feasible things you could want it to be, but Rhonda keeps asserting, 'THINK IT!' There's a fine line here between psychology and magick, and I was not impressed by this book's assertions at all.

    Dismayed

I heard a lot about how the law of attraction could change people's lives. I am big on the concept of positive thinking, but I did not find any rational reasons that this technique would work within this book. I always wondered if a thought by itself could change the hard facts of the future. If it can, this book didn't begin to say how. The premise that likes attract likes is exactly opposite of what physicists say. In real Nature, they say that opposites attract. I would tend to believe the thousands of physicists, not this publicity ploy. Good luck to anyone who benefitted from this book, but I would guess that¿s just coincidence or seeing the glass half full. I am now reading another book that truly explains how this happens.

If you want to read 200 pages of the same thing over, over and over again - THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!

I honesty couldn't finish this book. It was so redundant - you probably only need to read the first 20 pages and be done with it - unless you enjoy reading how different people can re-state the same concept over and over again. Sure, I agree with the idea that positive thought can be powerful and life-changing, but it does not guarantee that you will become filthy rich in addition to some of the other claims this book makes. Lastly, I hate books that use science improperly and out of context. I don't think that Newton's 1st law was intended to be translated into some money making scheme - the authors' attempt at using scientific laws in their claims would come across as completely absurd to anyone with any background in science.

The Secret to a good life.

I was skeptical when I got this book. I'd heard all the hype but wanted to see for myself what the big deal was. Well, it's basically a change in your attitude, that's what it preaches. If you are more greatful, more appreciative and more willing to let your real wants shine through, you will engage in the secret. It can be life changing, if you let it. A really, really good read.

    A complete change of attitude

When I read the intro to this book, I thought it sounded a little too far fetched. But as I began reading, it started to strike a familiar chord with me. My outlook has always been "You get out of life what you put into it." So the Law of Attraction kind of made sense to me. I'm one of those people who always say "I never win anything" but I stopped saying that and started thinking "winner." I went to a bridal fair with my daughter shortly after reading the book and we both signed up for the prize drawings. Five minutes later, they announced the first winner of the evening....me! I won a fabulous Lancome gift basket! We spent an hour stopping to check out the different vendor stands and sampling products. Several more names were drawn during this time. My daughter was ready to leave, but I hestitated. I told her I just knew they were going to draw her name. I told her to wait until the next drawing and then we would leave. Sure enough, her name was selected! She won a beautiful fragrance basket.
I have a Vision board and keep a Gratitude Journal. I practice daily turning negative thoughts into positive ones and the results have been amazing. This book has changed my attitude and my life!
