The last thing this Texas sheriff wanted was to heed a frantic late-night call from the woman who'd destroyed his life. Old wounds were ripped wide-open after Lucas Creed discovered that his former deputy had moved on—and was pregnant to boot. But after rescuing Kylie Monroe from hired guns and taking her under his protection, she repaid him by dropping a bombshell on his world-weary shoulders....
Kylie knew that her misstep in the line of duty had cost Lucas everything. Now, as his secret surrogate, she planned to give the gruff lawman the ultimate gift to heal his heart—although it would break her own. When they teamed up to expose the corrupt man behind the threats, would their glacial rift melt beneath an inferno of desire?
Lucas has had a tough three years since his wife and their unborn child's deaths. Now, when he's dragged into a shoot-out at the home of the woman he holds responsible for his broken heart and world, he has more than a little trouble forgiving her. Kylie is just trying to do the right thing. By being the surrogate mother for Lucas she believes she is carrying out her promise to her best friend, Lucas's wife. She only wants to make Lucas happy, while accepting that she will not have his forgiveness or be a part of the baby's life after the child's born. But the two are caught in a whirlwind of emotions when they realize the danger Kylie and the baby are in. Will Lucas protect Kylie grudgingly, or will he discover that he can not only forgive her, but wants to welcome her into his life...forever?
I was a little upset with Lucas's character at first just because his grief from losing his wife and unborn child (understandable) caused him to be blind to Kylie. I liked Kylie because of her independent attitude and personality and couldn't find fault with her for Marissa's death. It was great, though to see their feelings for eachother grow. I really did like this story. One of the better ones in the Harlequin Intrigue series.
