Vancouver 2003 Hard Cover First Edition Very Good in Very Good jacket 8vo. Pp xii 400." Based especially on his seminal study of maps produced after the voyage, Bawlf shows with ... certainty that Drake sailed all the way to Alaska, much farther north than anyone has heretofore imagined, thereby rewriting the history of exploration. He was, Bawlf claims, in search of the western entrance to the fabled Northwest Passage, at which he planned to found England's first colony, and wrest control of the Pacific from Spain. Drake's voyage was in fact so far ahead of its time that another 200 years would pass before the eighteenth-century explorers of record reached the northwest coast of North America. Drawing on newly uncovered evidence, geographer and maritime historian Samuel Bawlf masterfully reconstructs Francis Drake's historic round-the-world expedition, exploring the drama surrounding the voyage and offering intriguing insights into life at sea in the sixteenth century. But it is Bawlf's assertion of Drake's whereabouts in the summer of 1579 that gives the book even greater originality: from an intensive study of maps of the period, Bawlf shows with certainty that Drake sailed all the way to Alaska-much farther than anyone has heretofore imagined-thereby rewriting the history of exploration in North America.

    more from this reviewer

Imagine walking the deck among men like these.

This was the second of ten books I read in 2008 preceeded by Elizabeth by Anne Sommerset. Connecting these two is obvious. Men at sea in the 16th century were among the roughest people on earth, required to be if survival mattered. After pirating for the Queen for years, discipline was not a question for Drake's quest to go around the world. But to pursue the unknown on salt water took fearlessness only pioneers can possess. Descriptions of encounters with unknown sealife and unpredictable wild eyed foreign natives and their unfamiliar behavior led me to the next page every day until finishing this book. Facing difficulties at the Straits of Magellan would have turned me around which it actually did to one of Drakes three barks (ships). It dissappeared actually. Surviving storms on those smaller vessels is incomprehendable to me. Drake did it as well as mapping the coastline he discovered in America's northwest, fleeing periless weather and temperatures.

An outdoorsman's book? I believe so. An author achieves a unique level when he writes a book you want to read a second time sometime later in your life. Knowing you will enjoy it again is like money in the bank.

    Incredible "Behind the Scenes" History

Drake was always a man who seemed to be able to overcome all sorts of adversity and this book is one of those stories.
I was impressed with the book from th ebeginning but then got lost about two-thirds of the way in as the author tries to claim Drake discovered places others have been given credit. After about page 230, I gave up because it wasn't making sense and often seemed repetitive.
