Another Great Addition to the Ransome Collection

The Swallows are back and at it again! This time, they are surveyors, explorers, and map-makers, intent upon leaving no corner of their new surroundings untrodden. Secret missions, mysterious messages, elusive enemies, and unexpected reunions with friends are all part of this magical narrative.

In Secret Water, the Walker family itself is delightfully expanded and fleshed out. We meet both their father, on a short leave from the Royal Navy, and little Bridget (Vickie no longer), who is now old enough to accompany her older siblings on their hair-raising adventures. The care which they show for their little sister is heart-warming, and this particular relationship is perhaps one of the best points of the story.

For nearly the entire adventure, the parents are, Ransome-style, purposely absent; and while this may at first alarm some parents today, it is only fair to point out that this independence is only granted once the parents are sure it is quite safe. All in all, Secret Water is a great book, and the adventures the children meet with along the way are both realistic and exhilirating.

I recommend this book veyr highly; it's one of Ransome's best, and one of my favorites!
