Overview

On March 30, 1970, Secretariat drew his first breath in a little white foaling shed on a historic farm called The Meadow in Caroline County, Virginia. Three years later he would leave the nation breathless as he captured the Triple Crown, setting supersonic track records and giving a dispirited nation a new American hero.

Much has been written about Secretariat’s spectacular racing career and a major feature film by Disney about the great racehorse will soon be in theatres. However, the complete story of Secretariat’s Virginia birthplace and the Chenery family who raised and raced him has never been told...until now. Secretariat’s Meadow –The Land, The Family, The Legend is by Kate Chenery Tweedy, daughter of Penny Chenery (Tweedy) and granddaughter of Christopher T. Chenery, who founded the Thoroughbred farm in 1936.

An author and family historian, Kate Tweedy collaborated with Leeanne Meadows Ladin, a Virginia writer, to tell not only Secretariat’s story but the saga of an enduring piece of land where an “empire built on broodmares” produced an immortal son. Penny Chenery wrote the foreword to Secretariat’s Meadow and shared over 200 exclusive photos from her private collection for the 160-page pictorial history. The narrative is enriched by Kate’s vivid recollections of The Meadow as a child and her eyewitness account of the magic and the mayhem surrounding her mother and “Big Red” during the Triple Crown races in 1973. This book will appeal to horse lovers and history buffs alike.

Meet the Author

Kate Chenery Tweedy learned to ride at The Meadow as a child and later joined the family at races in New York and Saratoga Springs. At age twenty, she was in the eye of the whirlwind surrounding Secretariat and experienced his historic Triple Crown win at her mother’s side at Belmont. She has accompanied her mother, the First Lady of Racing, in her travels across the country to keep Secretariat’s legacy alive. Kate, an erstwhile lawyer, now teacher, editor, author and family historian, spent three years researching to do justice to the story of her remarkable grandfather and mother whose horses brought the national attention to that timeless place, The Meadow. She and her husband Jerry live in Littleton, Colorado. Her two grown daughters are educators and writers as well. Leeanne Meadows Ladin has been writing and riding all her life. She learned how to ride, bareback and barefoot, on pinto ponies at her grandparents' farm in southwest Virginia. At age ten, she spent all her birthday money on “The Fireside Book of Horse Racing – A Thoroughbred Treasury.” In 1973, she sat screaming in front of the TV as Secretariat won the Belmont by 31 lengths. Leeanne later had her own horse farm, where she enjoyed trail riding with her Tennessee Walking Horses and started her business, Free Rein Writing in 2000. Leeanne is the author of four books of regional historical interest, including the award-winning "The State Fair of Virginia - More Than A Midway," which featured a chapter on The Meadow. Today Leeanne lives in a 100-year-old Victorian house in Richmond with her husband Gary, hundreds of books and an office full of Secretariat memorabilia. Wayne Dementi is a noted Richmond photographer and president of Dementi Milestone Publishing, Inc., Wayne has specialized in photographic regional histories. His 1999 coffee table book, Celebrate Richmond, with a foreword by Richmond native Tom Wolfe, has exhausted three printings and was named the best-selling regional book by a local Virginia author in 1999. Since then, Dementi Milestone Publishing has grown significantly. The more notable titles include Facts and Legends of the Hills of Richmond, which just entered its second printing, The Byrd ~ Celebrating the Byrd Theatre, which includes a foreword by David Baldacci, and St. Joseph’s Villa ~ Never Stop Believing, which includes a foreword by Tom Bliley, Virginia's Seventh District Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives

    Amazing

This book is really good. It tells about the historical background of the Meadow and how it came to be. It also talks about all the owners of the Meadow and all the different people who worked there. It also talks about different racehorses that have been bred at the Meadow and of course it talks about Secretariat and his owner, trainer, rider, groomer, and all the other people who knew and took care of him. I love this book because it told me all these different facts about the Meadow that how it came to be and other facts that you will find out when you read it. :)

    Kate, thanks for the memories

interesting, does not focus on the horses but the people and locations involved with them. Gives a more realistic take on the operation of the racing stable than the movie Secretariat. Loved the book by William Nack and this is a good companion read, the real world of horse racing.

Such a beautiful story for a beautiful animal!

This book is a must read if you like not only racing history but stories of a spectacular horse. I loved the movie and learned much about a racing legend, but this book adds all the information that the movie couldn't tell you. What a beautiful story!

    Fabulous Book!

This is a fabulous book with beautiful photos that capture this wonderful family's story of love, perseverance, courage, loyalty, and oh yes, this great horse! This is a must read for all those who love these magnificent creatures, who love the land and respect family history, and who know something about the horse-racing world. I knew the property and knew of the family before Secretariat was born...this book is such a treasure. Big Red.Penny Tweedy, Lucien Laurin and Eddie Sweat comprised a team that remains unmatched.

    Fully detailed

Good book, nothing like the movie. Much more detailed, brings a tear to the eye at the end. If you're into horse racing this is a good book. This is a larger size book, with colored pictures.
