Secretary, the companion volume to the hit movie starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader, is the darkly comic tale of a young woman who finds love in a sadomasochistic relationship with her boss. The success of the film is due in no small part to Erin Cressida Wilson's adaptation of Mary Gaitskill's 1989 short story from her collection, Bad Behavior. See more details below

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal - Library Journal
With a decade of sexual harassment training behind us, it would seem that the age of interoffice trysting is over-or at least relegated to the corner of a smoky, dim dive bar. Secretary opens the door to the old days, offering a dark comedy about love based on a Mary Gaitskill short story. This is the coming of age of Lee (Golden Globe nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a troubled young woman with a cutting habit who becomes secretary to lawyer E. Edward Grey (James Spader). The two quickly fall into a sadomasochistic relationship, with both parties feeling released from their self-hate. A pleasurable twist on the modern office romance, Secretary asks us to question our perceptions of right and wrong. This is the first in the "Soft Skull ScreenPrint" series, offering "the best of the independent film scenes to readers," with an entertaining introduction by Wilson, an interview with director Steven Shainberg, and film stills. A good addition where independent films are in demand. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
