Children's Literature
Secrets in the Hills is an American Girl mystery featuring Josefina. Set in the rugged, rural hills of New Mexico, Josefina and her family befriend a traveling ranch hand that has been badly injured. Josefina's aunt, Tia Magdalena, had been teaching Josefina the methods of a curandera. A curandera knows how to make medicines from plants and helps to heal people. Josefina uses her newly learned skills to help the rancher recover. While caring for him she inadvertently discovers a map. The rancher confides that he is hoping the map leads to his ancestor's long lost, hidden treasure. Helping the ranch hand to interpret the clues is just one of the mysteries that Josefina hopes to solve. There is also the strange moaning sound she has been hearing in the early evening hours. Could the sounds belong to the lonely ghost of La Llorona? Josefina uses compassion and common sense to help those around her find answers, and in the process she learns about herself. Her character is compelling and her story is earnest, interesting, and extremely enjoyable. 2006, Pleasant Company Publications, and Ages 8 to 12.

Gr 4-6-Two more winning entries in a popular series. In Secrets, Josefina lives on her family's New Mexico homestead in the 1820s. She is fascinated when a mysterious man with an injured leg is brought to her house and she and her family must care for him. While laundering his clothes, Josefina accidentally discovers a treasure map in a pocket. Could it lead to buried treasure somewhere in the hills around her house? In Peril, Felicity lives on her family's Virginia plantation where she dotes on her prized horse, Penny. As things begin to heat up between the Loyalists and Patriots, the girl is intrigued by a local visitor, Mr. Haskall, who admires Penny and studies local plant life. However, Felicity begins to suspect he is not who he pretends to be when she discovers detailed maps of her family's plantation in his notebooks. Each story begins slowly, but methodically weaves in clues as it builds on the mystery. Background information is carefully integrated, especially in Josefina's story, which is rich with tales of buried treasure and local traditions, foods, and crafts. Both books include a historical note with color photographs and illustrations.-Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Secrets in the Hills written by Kathleen Ernst is an American Girl mystery about a young girl growing up in New Mexico during the early 1800's named Josefina Montoya. Growing up in the midst of New Mexican traditions, legends, folktales, and more, Josefina has heard many tales in her life. She's heard stories of buried treasure in the hills, and stories of a woman's ghost who cries and mourns in the night, for the loss she's had during her lifetime, before she became a ghost. On top of all that, a hurt stranger comes to stay at the Montoya ranch. After the stranger's arrival, however, many strange things start to happen. Josefina finds evidence there really might be some buried gold or silver treasure on the land and hills that surrounds her, and Josefina even begins to hear some ghostly crying that sounds like a woman. Josefina had heard such stories of these happenings all her life , told by the people around her, but she had never really expected any of them to be true. At the same time, Josefina is learning some new skills on things like medicine from a mentor. But Josefina, is determined to figure out what is really going on behind the stories of buried treasure and the ghostly sobbing. This mystery book is every bit as exciting and mysterious as the other books in the series, maybe even more. What makes this book even more mysterious is how it beautifully involves tradition, culture, legends, and the importance of family and friends into the mystery and much, much more. Thus book is promising for any girl who adores mystery, culture, legends, and spooky stories. This book definiteley deserves five stars from anyone who reads it! This mystery also applies a sense of growing up and dealing with different situations. this is also for an girl who likes the American Girl or AG's Josefina Montoya character. I Hope you find this mystery just as enjoyable as I did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
