Library Journal
In the last decade, almost 400 women in Ciudad Juarez in Chihuahua, Mexico, have been raped, strangled, mutilated beyond recognition, and left in vacant lots, ditches, or, usually, the desert. With legal authorities failing to cooperate, the victims' families have been unable to prosecute the perpetrators, and to date no one has been arrested for the brutal slayings. Once again, noted poet and human rights activist Agosin (Spanish, Wellesley Coll.) invokes her poetic muse out of indignation to accuse those who allow these crimes to continue and to invoke sympathy and retribution for the victims. Like the socially committed poetry of her Chilean compatriot Pablo Neruda, Agosin strikes out against both official apathy and the inhumanity of the situation. In general, her verse is not as combative as one might expect; the imagery is less vitriolic and the passion more restrained. Nevertheless, the volume complements the poet's continuing efforts (as exemplified by her earlier Invisible Dreamer and A Map of Hope) to articulate, defend, and protest the wrongs of the oppressed, be they women, political prisoners, or Jews. Capably translated in a convenient bilingual edition; recommended for both public and academic libraries.-Lawrence Olszewski, OCLC Lib., Dublin, OH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
