Editorial Reviews

Quilter's Home
Lura Schwarz Smith's book is soooo long overdue, but it was worth the wait! She and her National Geographic photojournalist hubby, Kerby C. Smith, have written a great book on working photography into your quilts. By using chemically treated and stabilized fabric sheets, anyone with a basic photo-editing program can print fabric images from an ink jet printer and sew them into quilts. But, really understanding how to do this well is where Team Smith's magic comes in.

Quilting Arts Magazine
For many, one of the most intimidating aspects of digital quilting is its technological requirements, but the authors of this book quickly put that fear to rest with their assurance that one need not purchase an abundance of fancy equipment to engage in digital processes. Instead, Lura Schwarz Smith and Kerby C. Smith teach you how to make the most of the camera and printer that you already have. Advice is given on how to take the most effective pictures, how to manipulate these images with basic software, and how to print on fabric sheets. Using fundamental design principles, the authors discuss how to combine your digital fabrics with the prints that are already in your stash, as well as more unusual materials like silks and sheers. They also expand beyond the digital realm, encouraging artists to incorporate other surface design techniques into their digital quilts using materials such as inks, colored pencils, paint and markers.

    Secrets of Digital Quilting

I have been a fan of Lura's art quilts since I first saw her demonstrate her face-painting techniques on HGTV's Simply Quilts. This book combines Lura's talents in art and quilt making with her husband Kerby's expertise as a professional photographer. It includes useful information on the how and why of using your digital camera specifically for printing on fabric, which I have not found in other digital photography guides. The technical chapters demystify those all those settings on your digital camera and the different types of digital files. Best of all, it explains how to use Photoshop Elements software to improve your pictures for the effects you want in your digital photo fabric. Even if you only want to use a point-and-shoot camera without learning all the technical stuff, there is good information for you in this book. There are mini-art lessons by Lura which deal with elements of design like positive and negative space, symmetry and balance, shape and form, color and value. Additionally, there is a section in which Lura references the types of markers and paints that she uses to enhance her surface design with additional color and shading. There are eight projects which utilize the different techniques explained in the book, with handy page references. What I like about the projects is that they are not patterns or designs for you to replicate. Rather, they offer guidelines and techniques for creating your own unique photo project. A section on construction technique offers a tutorial on piecing curves the P-Free way: no paper, no pins, no planning! I recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve their digital photography and editing skills, and learn some new art quilting techniques.

    I Also Recommend:

This is definitely a book for art quilters!

As an art quilter, I am always looking for new methods to expand my repertoire. Though I'm not into a lot of the current photo techniques used in today's art quilts, I do definitely use my camera and computer to inspire me and to help me make the patterns for my quilts.

Lura and her husband write in a clear concise way that gets to the point, but shows all the tips and tricks to get better organized, and to make better photos. I especially love the details they've given for working in Photoshop Elements, as this is a program I have just purchased. I looked through this book in the store, and new immediately this book had to go home with me!

I have loved Lura's work for years. Her portraiture and painting techniques are exquisite. She is a very generous teacher, sharing her techniques freely, so that others may blossom in their quilt making.

Kerby and Lura taught me something new about photography within the first 25 pages of the book, White Balance. I didn't realize that existed, let alone the tremendous impact it made upon my photos. Thanks to them I can now create much better pictures, and thus, better quilts.

Whether I ever actually print one of my photos on fabric or not, my quilts will take a giant leap forward because of this one book.

Use your photos in your quilts!

Secrets of Digital Quilting is written by Lura Schwarz Smith and her husband Kerby C Smith in a very accessible and easy to understand manner. They explain in simple language some of the mysteries of using a digital camera and photo editing software to prepare your photos for printing onto fabric, before looking at additional methods of enhancing your pictures with artists materials eg inks, paintsticks, crayons etc. The second half of the book starts by looking at design principles when designing your quilt - colour, balance, line etc. They then look at different projects in which you can use your photos and use the projects to continue to develop new skills with photo editing, for example, cleaning up old photos, enhancing the colours, using layers and using different fabrics other than cotton. There are additional helpful hints, 'secrets', explained along the way and lots of samples to view and inspire you as you start on this journey to use digital photos to create your own unique quilts. I have found this book not only educational but inspirational and will refer back to it for the techniques in it as I develop my skills using my photos in my quilts.
