Overview

How to satisfy the endless hunger for information among the millions of readers caught up in The Da Vinci Code mania? Secrets of the Code: The Unauthorized Guide to the Mysteries Behind The Da Vinci Code is the most comprehensive, literate guide available for interpreting the intellectual intricacies of Dan Brown's bestselling novel.

This unprecedented volume provides a wealth of fresh insight from the world's most respected authorities on the novel's controversial historical, religious, artistic, and scientific themes. Interviews and commentary from renowned scientists, theologians, archeologists, philosophers, historians, and art historians address such provocative topics as:

* What was the true identity of Mary Magdalene? Was Mary Magdalene a disciple of Jesus and did she write her own gospel?

* Was Jesus married to Mary Magdalene? Did they have a child together?

* In the late 1960s, the Church publicly reversed its 1,400-year-old position that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, but this revised history was never effectively communicated to the public. Has there been a "cover-up" of the role of women in church history?

* Did some geniuses of art and science--like Leonardo DaVinci and Isaac Newton--belong to secret societies that had the most compelling "insider information" in history? Did Leonardo convey some of the ideas in The Last Supper and other paintings?

Packed with excerpts from many original works, all-new material, and interviews with prominent scholars, Secrets of the Code will satisfy readers'curiosity, engage their imagination, and provide them with insights to better understand the multi-facted mysteries, secret codes, and messages embedded in the novel. As Dan Burstein explains, "My goal in writing Secrets was to explore all the major mysteries of history--from religious history to art history--suggested by the plot of The Da Vinci Code. I assume there are a lot of other readers out there like myself who want to know what is fact and what is fiction in The Da Vinci Code. Secrets will give everyone the tools to be able to develop their own ideas in response to many of the provocative questions the novel touches on."

Meticulously researched and compulsively readable, this volume is an excellent choice for book clubs and discussion groups.

Make Up Your Own Mind with This Great Book

This 'New York Times' bestseller is a great book for deciphering the mysteries of 'The Da Vinci Code.' You will come away from this book wanting to know more, too. Its greatest benefit lies in the fact that it is a compilation of experts presenting their views on a particular topic, be it the question of whether Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married or if Opus Dei is really as sinister as portrayed in the novel. Here you will find world-renowned experts like Elaine Pagels (now working with National Geographic on the Judas Gospel) who have written extensively on their fields of expertise. Each section stands alone, so you can skip around the book based on what questions are most compelling for you. You can also just read it straight through. The range of expertise, the variety of topics covered, and the lack of a particular slant to the book overall make this a spectacular beginning for your continued reading on topics emanating from the novel. I got this book through the BzzAgent program, and I found it to be a very interesting companion to 'The Da Vinci Code,' and I would certainly recommend this to everyone who has read the novel.

    form your own opinion

This is a great book for reading what is out there and then making up your own mind. I loved this book- got it from the library and then bought it. I helps dig through both the pros and cons. Everyone who reads the Da Vinci Code is left wondering what is fiction and what is based on some kind of fact or legend or story or myth. I think it is a great book a good go along to Da Vinci code if you want to look at both sides and make up your own mind.

    A Fascinating Read!

In the book 'Secrets of the Code,' Dan Burstein DOES not answer any of the BIG questions raised by the book 'The Da Vinci Code ' nor does he seek to convert the reader for or against the book, rather he gives the reader a compilation of the information he gleaned from his research into it, and lets the reader make his own jugdement. He also presents some facts pertinent to the book and it's success (The Cardinal said what?!) and seperates out for the reader some of the fictional parts of the story. Additionally, he gives some excellent resources for those who wish to delve deeper into some of the issues he presents. Whether you're a Dan Brown enthusiast or not, 'Secrets of the Code' may well open your eyes and mind to new ways of looking at traditional ideas and ideals.

    Okay, but not great

This book is a compilation of various scholars' opinions. It doesn't really get you any closer to the answers you are seeking; it actually creates more questions in your head. It is well put together and can be interesting at times, but I found it a bore and unexciting, especially compared to the DaVinci Code itself.

    this is a must read...

What a great concept! To finish a 'best seller' that leaves you wondering what's real? what's fiction? And, then to find out that a new book exists that explores the myth, truths and fantasies of the Church's history regarding the role of woman thru the ages and many, many more issues. This book is fun reading and you realize that alot of critical study has gone into compiling the evidence that leaves you wanting to ask more questions. That to me is a good read. Suggest that you buy this book.
