Heiress Elisabeth Congdon, 83-years-old and partially paralyzed, was smothered in her bed. Her night nurse was brutally beaten to death on the grand stairway, trying to defend her charge.
The police immediately suspected MIss Congdon's adopted daughter, Marjorie Congdon Caldwell, and her new husband, Roger Caldwell. Greed was the motive, they alleged.
Roger Caldwell was tried and convicted of the crime, but a jury later acquitted Marjorie, who'd been charged with planning the crime.
The story continues, though, with Marjorie charged with bigamy, arson and more murder.
