Overview

Homicide detective Kara Gillian has a special talent: she can sense the "arcane" in our world, and there's quite a bit of it, even in Beaulac, Louisiana. She's also a summoner of demons, and works on a task force that deals with supernatural crimes. Her partners are attractive and smart FBI agents, but they're not summoners, and they're not telling Kara why they are on this special force with her.

TO make things worse, Kara has pledged herself to one of the most powerful of demons-a Demon Lord-who helped save her partner's life, but now expects things in return. Meanwhile, she's trying to solve a string of murders that are somehow tied together by money, sex, rock music and...mud. But how can she concentrate on the case when she's not even sure who-or what-her partners are?

This is an excellent police procedural urban fantasy

Although she has doubts about wasting her time watching over lead singer Lida Moran and her band Ether Madhouse, Beaulac, Louisiana Police Detective Kara Gillian a demon summoner does so anyway. When a golem tries to snatch Lida, Kara and FBI agent Ryan Kristoff prevent the abduction but also know a supernatural essence threatens the singer.

Kara realizes how wrong her original assertion was when band members are murdered. Kara and Ryan team up to keep Lida safe and learn why someone is killing the band of Ether Madhouse and tried to kidnap the singer. Meanwhile Kara struggles with her summoning relationship with Demonic Lord Rhyzkahl and her attraction to Ryan while she soon concludes her whine seems minor to what she has just learned.

This is an excellent police procedural urban fantasy that like its two previous arcane forensic investigations (see Mark of the Demon and Blood of the Demon) stars a terrific lead protagonist who holds together the merging of science and magic in a whodunit. Kara is fabulous as the focus of the case and of relationships with the Fed and with the demon as the Bayou heats up with another magical mystery tour that will take readers away from the mundane to the enjoyable world of Diana Rowland.

    Diana--Bravo!!!

Wow! I am speachless. Can not wait for next in series. While the murder mystery aspect of the book was fine, I really only care about learning more of the characters. 1) Ryan, what is he? (same question for Zach and Marco). Why cant he remember what his capabilities are? Why wont he just an up and Kara right off her feet.? 2) Rhy, what is hoping to accomplish thru Kara? Does he only care for her to complete mysterious goal, or could he actually be capable of love? 3) Kara, who is trying to summon her into the deamon realm? Does she have power or capabilities that have yet to be discovered? Of course I have my own theories and am dying to see how the series pans out. I am on Team Ryan, meh what can I say--I like the good guys. Now with the surprise twist at the end, he is even more appealing to me. He is the best of both worlds :)

    The World of Weird

Although I had the unfortunate instance of forgetting to bring the book with me on my vacation, it was waiting for me like an old friend when I got back. The world-building is always evolving with this series, drawing you deeper and deeper into the World of Weird. Also you get the feeling you are talking with old friends when listening to the characters. They may piss you off now and again but you always care what's happening to them.

I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book thanks to that last chapter. It wasn't quite the throw the book across the room scenario as with Game of Thrones, but it was close. But only in the best of ways. ;)

    Disappointing

The other books in this series were awesome, fast reads, and hard to put down. I was very disappointed after waiting a long time for this book to be released and it turned out to be what it was.

Although important information was revealed about some major characters, it seemed as though this book was just "filler". The info could have easily been slipped into her last book or another with more meat. There was a lot of internal dialog and way too much detail about unimportant things that the main character saw/did (how long she spent in her kitchen, driving to places, etc). There was also very little interaction with the main character and her demon "love interest", which is honestly one of the best parts of this series.

So sadly disappointed. I hope the author picks the pace back up with the next or I will likely stop following this series.

    Still great!

Three books in and I still love this series. It only gets better and so does Rhyzkahl.

    I Also Recommend:

    Secrets of the Demon

I strongly suggest you read the previous books in the series (Mark of the Demon and Blood of the Demon) prior to reading this installment. It took me a bit to get into this book, even though this was a quick read for me. The story wasn't slow per se but there were more internal dialog and senseless interactions than I would've liked. Once this book reached the mid-way part, it started to move faster; and was able to hold my attention and interest. The story was interesting and creative, and there was a good amount of mystery to the plot. For those looking for a police procedural novel, this series is not it. I don't know why the author wrote Kara in as a police officer. She would do better to be a PI; her job is pretty much secondary. Most of the time her precinct scenes felt forced, like the writer included them solely to fill-in some pages. Rhyzkahl is by far my favorite character and the top reason as to why I keep returning to this series. He is devious and honor bound, and continually keeps me guessing his intentions. I can honestly say, if Lord Rhyzkahl was not in this series, I probably would not continue to read it. For the Kara and Rhyzkahl fans, this installment is a delicious treat. We don't get as much interaction as I'd like, but the author gives us a glimpse into some sinful scenes. I recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy fans and look forward to reading the next book Sins of the Demon.

    Highly Recommend!!

If you like Kim Harrison and Patricia Brigg books than you'll love this series. It fits into that style of writing where your constantly wondering what the writer will pull out of their brain to make it work. And work it does!
