    The Clan of the Free

The Clan of the Free: The History of HorseClan
    Written by Braveheart

    Chapter Nine:
Silver rounded a corner, his silver paws skidding over fallen leaves as he ran towards the fox. The russet-furred creature was huge, larger than any fox he had ever seen. It's red fur was bushed out and matted in several places, making it look more menacing. Blood and saliva dripped from it's fangs, and it's amber eyes glowed with fury.
It dropped the cat it had been attacking, and turned on Silver when the black tom approached. His sea-green eyes wide with shock, the loner recognized Fawnstep—her blue fur turned red with blood.
"Come over here and fight, you mange-pelt!' Silver hissed, unsheathing his claws. The fox growled, it's amber eyes gleaming with pleasure at the thought of ensnaring a new victim. With a cry, the tom leaped into battle.
The fox was slow, but strong. As Silver leaped forward, the russet creature shoved him away, and the black and silver tom crashed to the ground. Bloody fangs snapped at him, but he rolled away just in time.
Silver lunged again, using a basic move that he had learned when he was barely apprentice age. "Attack with one paw, then the next," a voice seemed to whisper in his ear as the loner remembered his training. Wheeling about, he smashed his left paw into the fox's muzzle, then slashed it's ear with his other forelimb. He felt blood welling up from beneath his blows, and gave a yowl of triumph.
But his sense of victory was short lived. The fox backed away, but hastily renewed it's attack, snarling viciously and leaping for Silver's throat. The tom ducked again, sliding underneath the fox to rake at it's belly. Of course, then came the counterattack, and Silver struggled to escape as his russet opponent came crashing down apon him.
Panting and gasping for breath, the black tom scrambled away from the raging fox, and turned once more to face his enemy. Slipping one back leg forward, he kicked out at the fox, and scarred it with his front claws.
Claw, slash, dodge, bite—the movement of the battle seemed almost farmiliar in a way, as if he was recalling past memories. But then again, Silver realized, his past had been filled with fighting that he hadn't wanted to recall.
His silver and black fur was stained with blood, and his energy was seeping away. Silver wondered how much longer he could keep this up, as the fox showed no signs of tiring, though he had given it several major wounds.
At long last, the loner saw his chance, and slipped in to sink his fangs into the fox's neck. He quickly backed away though, suddenly remembering that the Warrior Code stated that no warrior should kill.
"I'm NOT a murderer," Silver whispered, and his words seemed to mean more then he could know.
The fox backed away, seeming to know that the battle was over. With a last growl, it slunk away into the trees, leaving nothing but the scent of blood.
Silver then heard a faint moan behind him, and remembered Fawnstep. "W-wh—" she began to say, but Silver cut her off."You okay? Think you can make it back to camp?"
The blue shecat nodded weakly. "I've suffered worse..." she meowrd, half to herself.
So have I, he thought, and murky yellow eyes flashed before him once again.
Silver shook them away, then offered to Fawnstep, "Come on. I'll help you." The shecat nodded, and the loner helped her to her paws.
"Let's go," the black and silver tom meowed quickly, and they started back towards HorseClan camp.
