Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In their work, the Condons, a father-and-son team of trust and estate lawyers, discuss how to handle properly the allocation of assets after one's death and how to avoid possible problems. The Condons use actual cases from their law practice to discuss the multitude of situations that can occur when planning an estate, e.g., conflicts among children, protecting one's inheritance from children's creditors, conditioning the inheritance on the child's actions, leaving money to one's spouse, providing guardians and trustees for the children, and avoiding the impact of taxes. This is not a step-by-step how-to book but a source of ideas and questions to ask one's lawyer when planning an estate. A former writer and editor for Consumer Reports, Conkling (Get in Shape, Stay in Shape, Consumer Reports Bks., 1989) has written an excellent book on how to handle a child's financial affairs from conception to college and beyond. Conkling begins by discussing what she feels is the most important thing one can do for the child-preparing for one's death by writing a will. She talks about the importance of selecting a guardian and arranging for the payment of funeral and burial expenses. Conkling then spends the remainder of the book on many important aspects of having and raising a child, e.g., paying for day care, saving for college, and paying the child's taxes. Each chapter has an outstanding resource section with lists of organizations and bibliographies. An important book for all parents and future parents. Both books are recommended for public libraries.-Joel Jones, Jefferson Cty. P.L., Arvada, Col.
