Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carollyne Hutter
Every year, millions of people visit the Grand Canyon to see the striking layers of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are one of the three types of rocks that make up Earth. The book explores sedimentary rocks through a series of questions. What are sedimentary rocks? What is inside Earth? How are sedimentary rocks made? What types of sedimentary rock are there? What do we use sedimentary rocks for? Do sedimentary rocks last forever? Are we harming igneous rocks? Each section contain the following sidebars: "Science Tip," which shows how to learn more; "Rock Roles," which looks at the work of those involved in the study of rocks; and "Number Crunching," which explores the amazing numbers in the world of rocks. Dramatic photographs in each chapter bring the concepts to life, along with clearly labeled diagrams. The book's language is simple and concise, which should draw in even reluctant readers. The book closes with a hands-on activity to make one's own sediment. Throughout the book, various words are in bold, which are explained in the glossary at the end. A brief biography of William Smith, a famous geologist who studied sedimentary rocks, is also included. As part of the series "Let's Rock," the book can be used in science and geology units either alone or with other books in the series. Reviewer: Carollyne Hutter
