    Good box set

Im always a little cautious when buying novellas by new authors because im not sure what ill get, but all in all this box set was very good. There were a couple stories I didn't really geg jnto and others that I wish would have been longer. Ahhh the novelty of a short story :) I would recommend this book to individuals who like novellas not just for the charity factor, but because these new authors are individuals I plan to look more closely at when considering future reading materials.

Hockey and romance all for a great cause!

Drawn in by Toni Aleo's hockey series. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology. I even noted down the authors to look up their other books. Love the hockey theme.
I look forward to future Write for the Cause anthologies.

(Note, there is Sex in these stories and one story in particular could cause some people to be uncomfortable. Just skip over what you don't like and move on.) Don't let your prejudices stop you from supporting a worthwhile cause.

I love hockey romances.  So when I discovered that a bunch of my favorite authors came together with an anthology I was doing back flips.  Okay I’m not really capable of doing a back flip without seriously hurting myself, but I did a lot of them in my head – where it counts.

Even more amazing they put this anthology together for an incredible cause,  the fight against cancer.

The anthology opens with Toni Aleo’s Tangled in the Laces (The Assassins series: Prequel to Laces and Lace coming out in 2015).  All I can say is incredible,  my heart just melted.   It was a truly magnificent story about a strong heroine, Lacey Martin, who survived breast cancer and the wonderful perspective first-round draft pick hockey player, Karson King,  who loves her.  I will anxiously be counting day the days to the release of Laces and Lace to read the rest of their story. Tangled in the Laces has become my new favorite in the Assassins series.

Next up is Cassandra Carr’s and Cindy Carr’s HOOKING HANNAH.  Hannah does not have the best image of hockey players.  NHL hockey star Scott Richards plans on changing her opinion.  First off, I love that the mother and daughter wrote this story together. I also enjoyed the concussion aspect and Hanna support of Scott.  This is a sweet book, with lovable characters that I hope will resurface in a future book.

Jami Davenport CRASHING THE BOARDS (Seattle Sockeyes 1.5) The Giants hockey team has been sold and are relocating to Seattle.  The players are not happy, especially team captain, Cooper Black. Management decides to hire professional party crasher, Izzy Maxwell to initiate some fun at the team welcome party to help team morale.  This was a very creative concept and original story that will have you smiling.

Catherine Gayle TAKING A SHOT (Portland Storm 2.5) Eighteen-year-old, Katie Weber, is suffering from leukemia and beginning to lose her will to fight.    Twenty-year-old  Jamie Babcock has liked his teammate's  daughter from afar.  Jamie’s team mates talk him into asking Katie to her prom to help give her something to live for. This story made me cry from both heartbreak and joy.  It is a heartwarming story you will not want to miss.

V.L. Locey - Heir Apparent is a clever tale about up-and-coming  goalie Jacobi Neal and the relationship he develops with his childhood idol and new teammate  goalie Cam Evans.

Jaymee Jacobs, A VALUABLE TRADE: Bryan Comstock is upset by his trade to the Dallas Comets, but his transition is made easier by their Director of Team Services Georgiana Pierson.

Bianca Sommerland BLIND PASS (The Dartmouth Cobras 0.5) Having followed the Dartmouth Cobras Series, I enjoyed learning assistant coach Tim Rowe’s story.  He is a lovable character with a great romance.

Nikki Worrell – Captain, My Captain (Prequel to the NHL Scorpions Series) I loved hearing Scorpions Captain, Keith Lambert’s story. It was a great way to complete this anthology.

A couple of authors were first time reads for me: Catherine Gayle, Jaymee Jacobs, and V.L. Locey.  I’m glad I finally had an opportunity to read something by all of them.

I would like to point out that I don’t remember ever giving an anthology five stars.  Typically, I might love one or two stories but never all of them, so I give the book what I feel is an appropriate average.  I literally loved the characters in every story and did not want any of them to end.

Whether you love contemporary sports/hockey novels, a good romance, or to support a wonderful cause: you will not be disappointed in this book.  It should be a staple in every romance library.

What is not to love in this book? It's hot hockey men being sexy and sweet. There are eight stories that are all great and just tease you enough to want to read more from each author.

    Overall antho rating: 3.5 stars

Stand-out stories: Hooking Hannah by Cassandra Carr and Cindy Carr, Crashing the Boards by Jami Davenport, Blind Pass by Bianca Sommerland and Heir Apparent by V.L. Locey because the characters were mature, confident to an extent and some great dialogues. Those were great stories. Read them!

In the middle for me were Tangled in the Laces by Toni Aleo. I don't read NA, but this couple was so adorable and the major drama hit me right in the gut. The downfall here was the cliffhanger ending with a note saying their story will continue in a full-length novel in 2015.

Taking a Shot by Catherine Gayle: This story definitely required a big box of tissues. It was also the second NA story, but it was so touching, I didn't even mind. Very touching.

Captain, My Captian by Nikki Worrell: Predictable plot and the dialogue sounded a little juvenile in places. One scene that made little sense to me for its presence was between Keith and a random hook-up named Pip. That scene contributed nothing to this story and just felt thrown in, so I have to wonder if that little ditty won't come back to haunt him later in the series. The story was okay but forgettable.

Least favorite was A Valuable Trade by Jaymee Jacobs: The characters were whiny, depressing and had zero chemistry. I'm also not a fan of cheating heroes. Despite the best efforts to make it seem like the girlfriend had already checked out of the relationship at the very beginning of the story, I don't think the attempt to make the cheating seem okay was accomplished. The dialogue between the hero and the girlfriend didn't help either. The girlfriend was mad yet indifferent and still had to “think” about relocating to him.

    The Bottom Line

Eight novellas that had something for everyone. Of the eight stories, three were NA and the rest were adult romances. Only two touched on the subject of cancer, and you will need tissues.

Personally, I avoid the NA genre because I prefer older characters. I'm just not a fan of teen or tween angst. Having said that, I didn't know they were NA stories when I signed up for the ARC. I wasn't even aware that the majority of the stories tied in to already published series, but I decided to give them a try.

If you love hockey heroes in your romances, then you'll love this anthology and all the diverse stories. It's also a great way to get introduced to some hockey romance series out there. I would purchase this solely for the cause.

Toni Aleo - TANGLED IN THE LACES
    ♥♥♥
I thought this was an intriguing story. I loved how it tied into the theme of cancer and charity I adored Lacey. However, it was a good romance, nice and spicy with an abrupt ending. If you like serial type stories this a pretty good, and I will be reading the next. I prefer a story with a conclusive ending or even a cliff-hanger but with some sort of closure to the first story.
Cassandra Carr and Cindy Carr -  HOOKING HANNAH
    ♥♥♥
Hooking Hannah was another sweet, hot romance. Hannah and Scott are two sizzling hot characters. I think you could say it had a happy for now ending or it could be leading into another story, it didn’t say there was one on the way though. If you like a good sweet romance about Hockey players and artists this is for you.

Jami Davenport CRASHING THE BOARDS (Seattle Sockeyes 1.5)
    ♥♥♥♥
This was such a beautiful, heart-breaking story. I think I cried from the very first paragraph.  I  applauded Katie’s dads team for  standing behind them so much you could feel the family spirit. I am definitely buying the rest of this series!

Catherine Gayle TAKING A SHOT (Portland Storm 2.5)
    ♥♥♥♥♥
I absolutely fell in love with this story. Izzy is so full of spunk and fire. She knows what she wants and goes for it. Coop is also stubborn and determined. . I loved the chemistry between these two and I can’t wait for more . this is a charming, fun and super sexy story.
    Jaymee Jacobs A VALUABLE TRADE
    ♥♥♥and a half
This was another good story. Though I felt it moved a bit fast I have nothing against sex on a first date I just felt it wasn’t in either of these two peoples characters. I really loved George and her fire.  The characters ar strong and the story is full of emotion My heart went out for Bryan and feeling unwanted from the trade off and indecision of his girlfriend. If you’re looking for a fast moving romance this is for you.

    V.L. Locey HEIR APPARENT
    ♥♥♥♥♥
This was another well-written story with broken men and team spirit .It is a Mm romance but I recommend it if you have been wanting to tread the waters of the genre. It’s full of emotion, sexy but sensual dealing more with th feelings of the men involved than the sex.

Bianca Sommerland BLIND PASS (The Dartmouth Cobras 0.5)
    ♥♥♥
I was on the fence with this one. The story had a good premise but I just couldn’t get the feel of Tim. I will say I haven’t read any of this series but I think I liked Tim’s brother the best.It is a good romance and has   a touch of Bdsm. I feel if this was a full length story  there was a lot of potential for it to have been even more amazing.

Nikki Worrell - CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN (Prequel to NHL Scorpions Series)
this was another brilliant story. I loved the emotions of the characters and the diversity. Each character had a distinct personality and there was conflict and happiness I definitely will be following this series.. the only reason I gave a 4 not 5 is there was one scene I felt didn’t quite belong. It dropped a hint then disappeared... this being a prequel I’m sure Pip may show back up but I didn’t see it add anything to this particular story. Having said that, I absolutely loved this story.

    ¿Sweet hockey heat for a collective cure!¿

    My rating: 4 of 5 ¿¿

Nine popular authors have joined forces to write eight deliciously hot and at times heart-wrenching hockey novellas, bundled together in a drive to Support the Fight against cancer!

    ******

Aside from the fantastic cause that joins these established authors together, they have a love for, and a solid knowledge of, the game of hockey, evident each of these short stories.
In all, this anthology makes for a good read for lovers of the genre, with a couple that stick out over the rest by merit of their deeper emotional range.

I am talking about Toni Aleo's TANGLED IN THE LACES, and Catherine Gayle's TAKING A SHOT. In both these stories, the writers have gone beyond the scope of a hockey story and have included the subject of the charitable cause of this anthology, namely cancer. In particular breast cancer.

Coincidentally in both books, it concerns breast cancer in young women and the men who end up loving and accepting them for the strengths they have and not for the assets they've lost. Both writers are able to captivate not just the physical, but the emotional damage that a disease as breast cancer can do. Especially for someone who has barely started living.

The insecurities inherent to their young age are amplified hundredfold by the physical scars left behind as a reminder of their battle to survive. And it takes two very courageous and loving young men, to teach them that their beauty lies in the strength and survival those scars represent.

Short stories are difficult to review, because you are not given very much to work with. And I am someone who likes to have more than just bones of a story - I like some meat on them. Something to put my teeth into, something to chew on. A serving of angst - which I had a little bit of - some decent context, a goodly amount of controversy, an interesting backstory. It simply isn't all possible to fit into a short. All these stories served up a fair amount of steamy heat, a bit too much sweetness for my tastes, but a great deal of hockey which was fantastic!!

I love hockey...like really love hockey so anytime I see hockey

I love hockey...like really love hockey so anytime I see hockey romance books I snap them up. Seduced by the Game is an eight novella boxed set featuring 8 great authors. Since I have read most hockey romance books, I was very familiar with six out of the eight authors and I was very happy to discover two (new to me) great authors. Most of the novellas are part of an ongoing series by each author but each novella can definitely be read stand alone. I totally loved this series.

Since the stories are novellas I really don't want to get into the plots and spoil the stories but I will say I enjoyed each and every one. A couple were frustrating to me because they had a bit of cliffhanger...not really a fan of cliffhangers but they totally made sense in the plots, just means more books I have to put on my future buy list.

Since the book is a fundraiser for the fight against cancer, I especially loved the stories featuring cancer survivors. Several of the stories you will definitely need tissue nearby when reading the story. Highly recommend this boxed set!!!(less)
