I received Seduced by the Gladiator for review from the publisher. It’s not a book I would normally pick up because I find the gritty, harsh world of the Gladiators to be, well… gritty and harsh. In fact, that whole time period is so barbaric that sometimes I can’t bring myself to believe it was real. I don’t want to believe it. How can anything good exist for anyone other than the most elite of society? So I began this book with much trepidation, but by the end, I was pulled into the world, invested in our hero and heroine, and wanting to see them be together, even if that meant in death. This was a pretty tough story to read, at times. The way slaves were treated, how humans had to fight one another to survive, just for the pleasure, the entertainment of the upper classes. Even now I’m shaking my head and the thought of it. If I didn’t know this was all true, I would think the author had a pretty twisted imagination! But I digress. I won’t recap the synopsis, but Seduced by the Gladiator gives us a glimpse into what life was like for slaves, Gladiators, merchants, rulers… the day to day kind of living, whether filthy and impoverished or extravagant. It’s a well written story, told in the first person from Lilia’s point of view. There was quite a bit happening right from the start, but the pace was slow due to the necessary world building and plot layout. It was all very interesting and the further along the story went, the more invested I became. Lilia is a strong woman. Of course, she has to be. She’s the only female Gladiator and that makes her an icon for some, and a target for others. I had a hard time connecting with her at first because she’s so determined. So strong. So independent. But the more I read, the more I came to realize that in her world, to be otherwise would mean death. At this point, I not only came to care about her, but to respect her. Christus is definitely a swoonworthy, tormented hero. He had had a good life, a wife and a child, and it had all been brutally taken away when they were slain by a neighbor who wanted Christus’s land. One thing leads to another and Christus is sold into slavery, and then, like Lilia, sold to this ludus to be trained as a Gladiator. Once he sees Lilia, the petite but fierce warrior, you can imagine how protective he became. Unfortunately, that wasn’t always a good thing, and led to more than a few problems between them. As I said, the story started on the slow side, but once it picked up, it did so with a vengeance. The fight scenes were exciting and, when I allowed myself to think about why they were there, also heartbreaking. And heads up! There's a lot of sex in this book, and I do mean a lot. The most explicit of it takes place between Christus and Lilia, but there are also scenes with anal sex, an orgy and even some spanking. If you’re a fan of the movie Gladiator, or the STARZ original series, Spartacus, you’ll want to check this out. It’s gritty, brutal, barbaric…and it’s honest. It’s also a very, very sexy story, and I might even go so far as to say it’s an erotic novel. The ending is sweet, the happily ever after is well deserved – and no, they don’t have to die to get it. When I’m in the mood for something given to the darker side of humanity, I’ll definitely be looking for more from this era by this author. You might have noticed that I capitalized the word Gladiator throughout my review. I did so out of respect for those real men and women who had no choice but to fight or die. My thanks to Avon Books for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I loved this book! It wasn't a typical historical, but I've come to expect this from Lauren Hawkeye. Instead of visiting the balls of the London ton, I was taken back to the times of the gladiators, and I loved every shocking, raw moment of it! Lilia was a wonderful heroine, very strong, but not so strong that she can't learn to lean on someone else when need be. I found her story very interesting, I guess I never thought about a woman as a gladiator. In fact, as this is written from the 1st person, I was a bit taken back when, around 4 or 5 pages in, I realized that this mighty gladiator was, in fact, a woman. Entirely my fault for not reading the summary first. ;) Oh well, it may have surprised me, but in a good way. Christus..ah, what a wonderful hero. So dangerous. So tortured. Such a strong man, forced into slavery and treated like a caged lion, brought out to fight, to stare at, but not worthy of anything. I almost cried when he told Lilia about his past. He so deserved a HEA, Lilia as well, and I was happy to see them reach it. “Have you thought that, by letting someone in, you will be stronger than you are alone.” ~Christus I can't tell you how much I loved this quote. Not only did it fit so beautifully, as Lilia was so hesitant to let someone in, thinking that the only way she could stay strong was by keeping that wall up. But this quote...it really hit home with me, perhaps due to some personal issues I've had lately. Regardless, I thought this simple quote, while perhaps not the sexiest one in the book, was the perfect one to describe Seduced by the Gladiator. And when he then tells her a few paragraphs later that she needs to accept that she's no longer alone, she's his...I melted! 4.5 STARS! Emotionally gripping, physically demanding, Seduced by the Gladiator is a perfect read! But be warned—it is not for the faint of heart. It's gritty, raw and rough, sticking to the real Rome of the past. If you prefer your historicals to be more tepid, look somewhere else, because this one is not for you. But if you want to try something new and exotic, this is the author to keep your eye on. Two gladiator books so far and I'm hooked, fascinated by the love stories she weaves during such a hard, but shockingly intriguing era! For a wickedly sexy and wonderfully intense story, be sure to pick this one up! Fair warning though: read this one at home... I wanted to finish reading it so bad, I took it with me. Let's just say that as steamy as this is, I could not stop myself from blushing, wondering if the people sitting next to me where reading over my shoulder...If so, they sure got an eyeful! :)

Though not usually a fan of first-person narration, I liked this one, primarily because I like the heroine. She was a fighter and a cynic so to watch the hero thaw her out through sex leading to emotions was good. This is a more erotic romance than a lot of Avon published books so be prepared for that between the leads. This book is set in ancient Rome and as such it's a violent book. The violence is sexual sometimes and should disturb modern readers. If you like the Starz series Spartacus, then you'll love this book. Finally, not to spoil the book but I was worried how the author would successfully make a HEA for two slave gladiators, but she did. I won't say how, but this has a true romance ending that rang true to the romance genre. *I received copy from publisher, Avon, in exchange for honest review*

Set in the world of ancient Rome, this is a story of sex, love, violence, slavery, and wealth. I really enjoyed the setting of this story, brutal as it is, and the viewpoint of a female gladiator. Lilia has been a slave since a young age, and has made herself into a fierce warrior. The problem is that because of her fame, she's also caught the attention of Gaius, an evil man and brother to the Emperor. But there is one man, another gladiator named Christus, who becomes her own personal champion. The sex scenes between Lillia and Christus are super hot, but you also get a sweet romance between these two slaves who would do anything to earn their freedom and live lives of peace. Lots of violence in some action packed scenes, combined with the Roman backdrop and the hot sex makes for an entertaining and fast paced story. 4 stars.

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I am not a huge fan of romance novels, but this one I could not put down. Historically accurate, this book provides readers with a glimpse into the life of a gladiator, a female one at that. Lauren Hawkeye is a fantastic author; this story was beautifully written. While it does have its share of sex, the book does not revolve around it. Instead it tells the story of two gladiators fighting for not only their lives, but their love as well. A very gripping novel, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes historical fiction, romance, or just a relatively short, well-written book.

I'm a history buff with a degree in Greek and Roman history, and I LOVED this book. The violence and the harsh life of Roman slaves is well written, and the main character's experience as a woman in the Gladiatorial world is mostly believable. I loved the chemistry between the lovers, and the sex scenes are smoking hot. I'm excited to read the prequel.
