Original review is much longer:

"CJ Robert's writing is dark, controversial and disturbing, but she is absolutely brilliant. I didn't like the way her books made me feel because I started to feel...understanding. I started to feel loss. I started to feel love. Just like Livvie, I was seduced. Seduced to want something that was so wrong. So disturbing. So dysfunctional, but at the same time it was so right."

    more from this reviewer

I knew even before I picked up this book that it was going to me

I knew even before I picked up this book that it was going to mess with my mind. I had, after all, read the first book. Still, somehow I was not prepared. In the first book of The Dark Duet we were introduced to Livvie and Caleb, and I completely fell in love with them. Caleb, oh, Caleb. What are we going to do with you? In this second book, we see their "relationship" evolve into something dark, dangerous, and very unhealthy…for both of them. We learn about Caleb's past and why he is the way he is, and through everything, I cannot but help falling more and more for him. Yes, it's unhealthy. I get it. However, I completely understand Livvie and her way of thinking. We also find out in this book that Livvie is capable of doing what it takes to survive. She is a survivor.

Through flashbacks and bits and pieces of Livvie's present mind, a rather dark place to be, the author unfolds the rest of Livvie and Caleb's story. The author takes us on a journey through the world of sex slaves. The story is incredible, the writing is superb, and I cannot think of one negative thing to say about this book. The author has this knack of getting into her characters' heads that makes you, as the reader, live the story through the words on the page. Open your mind and give the story a chance. You will not regret it.

Although I feel sick for liking this book so much, it was just plain amazing! Excellent writing bringing this book to complete life. I felt every emotion possible reading this book. Not once did I find myself speed reading like I do in books that can't keep my interest.

    Provoking

This story (including the first book) completely outclass the genre. I'm almost sorry I read them as I fear that I've been ruined for the more typical fare. Excellent!

    Soul Splitting

If the first book was like watching a car accident unfold in slow motion, with it's character and plot beginning to take shape...then this was the train wreck you couldn't pry your eyes away from. From the beginning I was begging for a happy ending for these two lost and conflicted souls. Even through their darkness, CJ gave them light. It's a series that will stay with you for a long while.

This was one of the most disturbing, yet powerful and emotional, books I have ever read. I had to take breaks while reading it because of how affected I was at times. The two books in the series hit you deeply at the emotional level, yet somehow you feel the twisted love story behind all the damage and violence and that keeps you reading and hoping for the light.

This book, as well as the first, was riveting and so dark. I felt physically ill at both Livvy's and Caleb's impossible situations. The only negative comment I have to make is the grammatical errors. I'm surprised no one else pointed them out. This author needs a good copy editor. What's more, she deserves it. Roberts has a compelling narrative voice and to compare her to E.L. James is patently unfair. This woman can weave a story to wring out every emotion. Fourteen hundred pages in two days? Yep, I did it.

    This series is>>>>

I don't know how I feel about this series. I guess I love/hate it. I love the love story but hate the things that took place. I found myself cringing and crying but intrigued at the same time! I couldn't wait to see how it ended but could not wait for it to be over at the same time because I could handle it.

    Heartwrenching

If you are looking for a typical romanance...this is NOT it. This series will make you feel thinks you never thought you could. It is disturbing, yet so intreging you wont be able to put it down.

Caleb and Livvie's relationship will tear at your heart. You will get angry. You will get sad. You will feel a rollar coaster of emotions for these two. But i can promise you wont be able to put these two books down.

I don't typically read such dark books, but this duet opened my heart to emotions ive never felt before. I loved an dhated this series but i CANNOT stop thinking about it, thus the 5 stars. This author is an incredible writer and i will be keeping an eye out for more from her! Definitely recommend to anyone over 18!!

    Another great read.

In this book (book 2) of the Dark Duet, Livvie realizes that Caleb her master is going to sell her into human trafficing to get revenge on the man responsible for his abuse and the killing of his master's family. Throughout this book, I experienced all sorts of emotions. And to have an ending like the one this book holds, will "knock your socks off".

    Wow! Just wow!

I am not sure how I thought this story would end, but that was not it. I loved it. The story was an emotional rollercoaster. I loved it. You must read the first book though. I suffered through the first book shocked, appalled, and a lot sick to my stomach. It was worth it. One hell of a ride.
