Overview

Sara Lawrence is happy to be a young widow, but her brothers insist on marrying her off again. The solution? Sara asks Nick Montrose, the notorious Earl of Bridgeton, to teach her how to ruin herself, thus rendering herself unmarriageable. Envisioning the day when the luscious Sara winds up in his bed, Nick is all too happy to oblige-but when he sees her "practicing" her lessons on other men, he′s inexplicably enraged. Then comes the day Sara′s brothers catch her and Nick in a compromising position-which leads to a speedy marriage neither wants. Can the love they don′t recognize find a way through their warring desires?

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Seduction of Sara is the lively conclusion to Karen Hawkins's trilogy of passionate Regency historical romances. Saraphina Lawrence is a willful young woman, as magnificent as the Lawrence sapphires she proudly wears. She wed once for passion and was widowed scandalously when her bridegroom fell from a carriage while coupling with his mistress. Now, faced with an ultimatum from her brothers -- remarry and live quietly and respectably, or lose the income that supports the independent life she loves -- Sara is quick to plan her strategy. Exiled to the dull town of Bath for the Season, she must find a gentleman who is socially acceptable, tolerable in looks and manners and, most important, willing to let Sara have her way in all matters. Her search is going poorly when she hits upon a splendid plan involving Nicholas Montrose, the notorious Earl of Bridgeton (the irresistible villain in need of redemption who was introduced in Hawkins's first book, The Abduction of Julia). Nick wants Sara for his mistress, and she thinks it would be splendid to have such a masterful lover teach her the art of seduction, hoping to use those new skills to lure a suitably compliant man to the altar. It would be hard to say whether Nick or Sara is more surprised when Sara practices the wiles Nick taught her on Nick himself -- and the man who swore he'd never marry is tempted to propose to the one woman who has promised she will never be his bride.

Karen Hawkins was raised in Tennessee, a member of a huge extended family that included her brother and sister, an adopted sister, numerous foster siblings and various exchange students. In order to escape the chaos (and whilst hiding when it was her turn to do the dishes), she would huddle under the comforter on her bed with a flashlight and a book, a habit she still embraces to this day. The Seduction of Sara

Chapter One

London

January 28, 1815

The only thing that stood between Saraphina Lawrence and Hades was a respectable marriage bed. Given her choice, she would have leapt over the bed and raced straight into the flames wearing nothing but the famed Lawrence sapphires, her arms spread wide to embrace the wild heat. It was a pity her brothers wouldn′t get out of the way.

"Damn all interfering men," she muttered, staring morosely out the window of the slow, plodding carriage.

Her aunt′s eyes widened in the uncertain light that shimmered across the silver strands at her temple. "I beg your pardon?"

That was Aunt Delphi′s answer to everything -- pretend you didn′t hear and look annoyingly innocent. So far it had won her a duke who′d had the good grace to die within twelve months of the wedding, and a handsome jointure that gave her a startling amount of independence. Not that Aunt Delphi ever used it.

"I said, ′Damn all interfering men,′" Sara repeated more loudly. "I have been grossly misused, and you know it. I was dragged out of my house --"

"To attend the social event of the season."

"-- and forced to ride in this decrepit coach --"

"As if Marcus would have anything other than the best coach made."

"-- just because my brothers are determined to make me into something I′m not." Sara scowled down at the brightly jeweled slippers that peeped from beneath her skirts. They pinched hideously, and had she not been determined to irritate her brothers′ tedious sense of decorum, she wouldn′t have worn the gaudy things. She slipped her feet free and wiggled her toes in the cool evening air, ignoring Delphi′s look of disapproval.

Though she hated his arrogance, perhaps it was just as well that Marcus had summoned her. It was time they settled this issue once and for all. She was beyond listening to solemn advice; every minute that she walked on the border of ruin and challenged the stolid face of society exhilarated her. For the first time since Julius′s death, she felt alive. Alive and free.

Aunt Delphi shook her head. "You have run mad. Since Julius died, you --"

"He died, but I did not. And I refuse to act as if I did."

Everyone had watched and waited for her to show some remorse, some hint of sadness, but she felt nothing. Not after her handsome husband died much the way he′d lived -- with his breeches about his ankles and his private member where it didn′t belong. It was no wonder Lady Georges had retired to the country after his death, it must have been a shock to watch her near-naked lover fall out of her carriage when her screams of ecstasy frightened the skittish horses into bolting.

Even worse was the fact that the entire ton knew the sordid truth. It had been the whispered joke of the season. The mere thought of it pinched Sara′s pride worse than her shoes ever could. But strangely, the pain of Julius′s public betrayal had freed her in a way that his death hadn′t. She would never again waste her Iife trying to be something she was not, no matter what Marcus said. "My brother should pay more attention to his own affairs and stop tormenting me."

"He cares about you, Sara. All of your brothers do."

"And I care about them. But I don′t go around telling them what to do. Marcus has sway over my funds until I am twenty-five years old, and then I am free. If he wants any peace in the next four years, he′ll let me be."

Shaking her head, Aunt Delphi regarded her niece with compassion. While Sara′s behavior might befuddle her brothers, Delphi understood it perfectly. Before Sara had married, there had always been a touch of wildness to her. She′d ridden harder, laughed louder, and been more spontaneous than any gently bred woman should be. But she′d always been surrounded by her brothers, all five of them startlingly handsome and larger than life, just as passionate in nature as their sister. To them, Sara was just Sara -- exuberant and in love with life.

Then Sara had met Julius and all her passion had focused on one man: she had loved him dearly. Julius had been in love, as well, for his marriage had shocked his friends even more than it had Sara′s. She was not the sweet, demure miss everyone expected him to wed.

But the relationship was doomed from the beginning. Julius, for all his wild ways, was brought up in a very traditional manner; he had one place in his life for his wife and another for his mistresses. Meanwhile, Sara came from a large, extended family and her ideas were quite different. She believed that love included complete fidelity and it never crossed her mind that her husband might believe otherwise. Had Sara been older, perhaps she would have demanded Julius give up his paramours. But she′d been seventeen, with no mother to confide in and too proud to ask for advice.

Delphi smoothed her silk skirts, a heavy lump in her throat. If she had not been so occupied with silly society pursuits, she might have been able to help her niece during what must have been an increasingly confusing and painful time. But Delphi, like everyone else, had missed the desperation of Sara′s subsequent actions. Directed by Julius′s critical mother and condescending sisters, she traded her sparkle for a distressingly cool elegance. To Delphi, it seemed that Sara′s natural exuberance died a slow and agonizing death while all hint of happiness faded from her eyes.

And the more Sara changed, the unhappier Julius became as the very things that had captivated him about his young wife disappeared. By the time Julius died he and Sara were little more than strangers, while the...

    Almost Losing A Love

I really enjoyed this book. This is the first time I have read a Karen Hawkins book and enjoyed her writing. Sara gets Nick to teach her how to be a seductress to get a husband, and the wheels are turned on her and ends up marrying Nick, but then later, almost losing him because of his illness and male pride. It's so amazing how the world turns and men don't realize what they have lost until they have lost it - the one important love in their lives, and all because of male pride. I'm so glad that this ended up with a happy ending, esp. when a couple belong together.

The Seduction Is a Little Weak...

I am an avid reader of historical romances for over 20 years (since high school). I stopped reading the past five years as I got burnt out on all the story lines and boring characters. I started reading again and focused on reviews to find new authors. Karen Hawkins seemed to get her share of positive feedback so, I tried 'A Seduction Of Sara'. Parts of the story were good and others lacking. The book started off strong and grew in the middle but, some of the later parts just didn't work good for me. For instance - Nick, the hero seemed to come on all strong, handsome and confident in the beginning as he decided to woo Sara and make her his lover. Yet...later in the book once he decides he loves her and wants to marry her, he is suddenly hit with all these terrible headaches that just laid him out for days and he turned away from Sara during these times. It was like he became another character - weak, unkept and less than appealing. In turn, Sara was all fire and brimstone to do as she pleased from day one after having a bad marriage end yet, once she hooks up with Nick - she is just willing to do anything to keep him in her life. When he pushes her away, then she decides to be without him. The story line seemed back and forth a bit - not to my liking. Sara was made out to be this girl who was tough, smart and knew what she wanted in life and took it yet...her first marriage was a mess and she got walked upon - this didn't jive with the way the character was made out to be. It seemed odd to me. Also, I didn't care for the scene when Nick decides to push Sara away so, he finds his old mistress and sets up a love scene - not my idea of a hero to worship. Yuck! Also, the passion was not too hot and heavy - a mild 3-4 on a scale of 10. Although the scences were tastefully written, it was almost too bland and left you moving on and thinking about what could have been. I think a book on seduction needed alot more passion to hit it's mark. The ending seemed to come together a bit too tidy as well. It wrapped up too quick and neat considering all the issues they recently had (his illness, not wanting kids, just being married, family involvement, etc.). I think the ending should have been stretched out farther and resolution given so, you felt confident their marriage would be a success. For now, they had passion and love but, the rest still seemed a bit of a mess. Oh well.... This was cool at best. Over-all though, I think the story line had good potential and the side characters had lots of possibilites - such as Sara's brother Anthony and friend Anna and her aunt Delphie and her french beau Henri. Sometimes, the side characters seemed more appealing than the main ones. I think Karen Hawkins has potential but, this was one was a little off for me. I think you can still buy and read this one but, consider it a good read not an excellent one. I will try another of her books in case others develop better and this one just missed the mark.

    How disappointing

Wish I hadn't been led astray by the review. At best this was a 3* book - there was neither a real plot nor any excitement in or out of the bedroom.

    more from this reviewer

    Superb Regency romance

In 1815 London widow Saraphina Lawrence wants her older brother Marcus to just leave her alone instead of telling her how to behave. Sara simply embraces life and does not care what the Ton thinks so she seems always one step away from scandal. Marcus wants Sara married again, as he believes a woman especially a female under twenty-five needs a husband to protect her. Sara was disappointed in her first husband because of his mistresses so does not want to go that route, but if she must she will choose a spouse that she can control.

Earl Nicholas Montrose has just returned from Paris with a goal of overcoming his reputation as a ¿bad boy¿ so he can attain social respect. However, when he meets Sara, his plan goes out the window, as he desires her like he never wanted a woman before. She wants to use him to teach her seduction, but knows he is not malleable, as is her requirement in a husband. Love enters the relational equation, leaving both bewildered and wondering what to do next.

Regency romance readers will appreciate THE SEDUCTION OF SARA, a battle royale between the sexes. The story line is amusing as Sara and Nicholas struggle with an unwanted attraction. The lead characters are a delightful duet whose disconcertion is exacerbated by caring interfering secondary characters. With this tale and its prequel (see THE ABDUCTION OF JULIA) the historical romance audience will recognize Karen Hawkins as a rising enchantress.
