Seduction of Silence: Journal of a Reluctant Widow

Overview

I have read books about widowhood and attended bereavement groups, and I have found many people who, once upon a time pledged until death do us part. How odd that these words that meant so little, long ago, come back to haunt us. I had no idea death was so final, that death separated us as if a knife severed something very real into two separate entities; one to remain here and the other to disappear from the face of the earth. In some strange ways I have grown. There seems to be an inner core that lay dormant ...

More About This Book

There seems to be an inner core that lay dormant all my life and is now starting to sprout. I find that I am more at peace with myself than I thought was possible. Yes, it is a kindness I seem to give myself...in recognition that, alone, I have moved forward along the path. I am standing taller than I would have thought possible. This life I have been given still has real value. My hope now is to be able to share this value with friends.

Seduction of Silence: Journal of a Reluctant Widow

This book enabled me to understand and accept the loss of my husband. It allowed me to realize I was not alone with my grief and showed me the way to begin my life anew.

Seduction of Silence: Journal of a Reluctant Widow

This is truly an unbelievable book. Each day is started with a title, when followed takes you into the mind of a woman searching for a resolution to the torment churning within every fiber of her being. The one titled 'Death, the Great Liberator' is so profound and yet so heart warming. She mixes emotions with laughter and loss with independence. I love her titles, The Gregarious Recluse, Waiting for Godot and othe Stories, Eternal Standard Time and the Cat's Meow. Her poems are deep and dark; and then she finds time to write a funny ode to Chinese food. I find myself following her pilgrimage through time. After reading the one titled 'Is Anyone Listening?' I want to respond and say I am listening, all who read this book are listening...you are not isolated or alone. We care, all of us care. And another title 'Attention Must Be Paid'. This is so very, very true...attention must be paid to our friends and loved ones. I am truly overwhelmed by the unaffectedness of the writing. Being an animal lover myself, I find her cat Finian a great asset in the book. He is obviously a well loved cat and in his own cat way returns this affection.

Seduction of Silence: Journal of a Reluctant Widow

How very wonderful to read a book that from the moment you start reading, you relive along with the author her transition from wife to widow. I have felt many emotions in my life but her gentle praise of her husband, her innate intellectual assessment of her present life gave me food for thought. How would I handle a loss? The author talks about her everyday musings, her parents, her childhood and friends. Each of her stories are like a brush stroke on a canvas and slowly the picture evolves, a portrait of a woman coming to terms with as she writes 'coming face to face with the dying time'. From the first story 'I see Red', I find myself seeing all the colors of the rainbow which is somehow integrated into the book. Maybe this is because her cat, Finian, named after the character in Finian's Rainbow is significant in many of her stories. Everybody who reads this book will no doubt leave with other impressions but I guarantee all will be lasting. This is a book to be cherished for a woman allowing us to look into her soul and heart.

Seduction of Silence: Journal of a Reluctant Widow

This book 'Seduction of Silence' is absolutely beautifully written, gloriously written and should be a big help to widows and widowers. Anyone who has suffered a personal loss can and will relate to these many, many entries. I believe there are over one hundred titles with very poignant insights into the heart and soul of a widow. The search for a graceful coexistence and peaceful compromise with death at times is emotionally taxing. I find the book rewarding in so many ways. I have at times cried with the author, my heart breaking as she tries so desperately to continue her life. Then, she stops and writes a few lines of poetry, some soul searching and others quite hilarious. Many of the stories are quite ironic, as she laughs at her foibles and then turns around and pats herself on the back (saying I'm gong to be fine, I am determined to be fine). Her conversations with her cat, Finian, are delightful and full of charm. I feel I know as much about Finian as I do the author and am enchanted by both. I think a book should be published just using her many, many titles. From the use of a nursery rhyme to a quotation from Shakespeare, she is never at a loss for words and original thought. This is the most unique book I have ever read. The total honesty of the author as she moves through the first year after her husband's death is not only helpful to others but also quite remarkable. I don't think anyone has ever been as candid and open about their life, especially under these tragic circumstances. I, truly, applaud her gift and courage in letting us all share this incredible journal.
